im running a 440 11:1 weisco piston and want to run a 12:1 je piston but im in the middle of ice racing season and thats the only time i ride it is at the races cause i dont have time after work. my question is do you think it will hurt it if i broke it in during ice racing cause besides the hole shot im holding it wide open down the straight aways but as soon as im toped out i let off if gearing is right other wise i bounce off the rev limiter a little bit.

if you heat cycle it 5-10 times in your garage itll be fine.

how do you do that just start it up and let it idle till its warmed up then shut it off let it cool down then start it up again?

The piston doesn't break in the rings is where you haveto let it break in. And I would listen to 2004exrider and go check out that site. Its good.

breaking it in during a race is the best thing imo

That was a fascinating read.

I got a 416EX, 10.8:1 piston, stage 2 cam break in coming.

Any other suggestions?

while breaking in a cam its good to keep it above 3000rpm, just ride it hard like you would normally ride.... i truely beleive that taking it easy for the first tank or 2 is a waste, also do not do heat cycles without putting load on the quad, thats one of the worst things to do. imo

I had to break in a new cam and piston at the same time back in october. I broke in the cam first using the instructions that cam with the hot cam after that I used the moto tune usa method for the piston.

First get the oil moving through the motor.. To do this remove the oil pressure screw. Turn the motor over with no fire. Then when oil comes out the hole, put the screw back in.. Be very easy with it, it breaks very easly. Then start it and ride it easy for like 30 min. Don't lug it around. But don't ride it balls to the wall.

After you do this.. RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!!! :D

like i said it imo, but sure while your just starting it inside your garage you are simply not putting any load on the piston at all. just like mototune article. You need to load the piston to seal the rings if you are not you are just making the piston go up and down without the applied force....... and therefor i beleive if you do heat cycles you will not get a complete seal in the cyclinder. I could be wrong on this but its something i've did for the last several years breaking in my motors and have had great success at. I did never understand why its good to take it easy on the motor at first anyhow? whats the point of 3000 rpm and 9000 rpm yes i know the difference but my point is why would it hurt the motor any more or less even though it is a new motor. as long as you are varying the rpm you should be good to go in my thoughts.
