hey all im new to the atv gig so bear with me
i recently bought a 2006 400ex and im having problems geting it to stay runing.
on initial start up i use full choke and it starts but i have to use the throttle to keep it runing. and it will only stay running after about 20 min of riding. even in a warm shop it will not sit and idle for for than a minute. its starts out very fast and seems to slow down and then die. unless i give it a bit of gas using the trottle. how do i enshure that my idle and air fuel mixture are factory settings so i can work from there? i do not own a tachometer. any suggestions?

Is it bone stock? If not what mods?

Replace your pilot with a 42, it's a 38 I believe now but if you switch it you'll have no issues.

Yes, he's right. You need more full at closed throttle. You could try to adjust the idle screw, but I don't think that would help much. The colder air has leaned out the idle circuit.

Yep put in a 42 pilot and that should be it.

Odds, are if/when you put it in you'll need to bump your idle up a bit too.

thanxs for the help.

as stated above the bike is stock right now.

will i notice a big diffrence in torque when i get the k&N air filter and drill two holes in my air box.
also what brand of slip on pipe should i be looking at? what are the favorites?

side note i had it in the shop tonight and turn the idle right down and then 2 1/4 turns up and got it to sit and idle. got a tachometer from were i work and it said 2200 rpm and my oweners manuel say it should be around 1400 +-100 if i turn down the idle any more it just cuts out.. is 2200 rpm normal?

Instead of drilling holes there are two companies that make lids with filters built in. You might want to look into those or your air filter will get trashed each time you ride.

I don't know about the torque gains as I put on the K&N lid and full exhaust (HMF) at the same time.

About the idle, the book specs go out the door when you start modding. Your engine is breathing more and getting more fuel now.

From what I've read in other threads most people recommend HMF for an aftermarket pipe.

i have narrowed it down to two pipes .

Yoshimura RS3 comp-96 Slip on

HMF sport series slip on

any thoughts on these two systems?
