How many of you who have rebuilt a 400 changed the cam chain? I am building a 416 with 11:1 compression and need to know if it is absolutely necessary to replace the cam chain. Thanks for the responses.

i don't think that it is absolutely necessary but it would be a good idea to do so. especially if it has been a long time since it has been changed. because it could strech and come off somewhere leaving you stranded

When I put the 440 kit in 00 400ex I never replaced my timing chain but the bike had low hours back then. I rode the crap out of it for 3 years and im friend's with the person who has it now and still hasn't had any problems.

stretching and giving you some poor timing. get a new one and be done with it.
