A larger pilot jet will make cold weather starting much easier but, a #42K may be too big (rich) for a stock 400EX. I would install a #40K. Bump it up if you make any motor, air box, or exhaust mods.

No it will not cause any problems cus I have one in my bike and it starts right up, just push the throttle three times and it will fire right up. There's no harm in jetting unless it is done wrong.

What is the stock pilot jet size?

#38 Keihin is stock. Most people, frustrated with cold weather starting issues, bump them up to a #40 or #42.

I installed a 42 a couple months ago. It does start a little better, but it still takes a bit of effort.
