I'm putting a two stroke in my project quad and was trying to get some ideas for the motor. The frame is a dark blue/purple color that almost looks black except in high light it looks blue. The motor mounts, a-arms, and swingarm are black. If you don't mind post up pics of your painted engines so I can get some ideas. Thanks.

Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to piecemeal random individual colors that you like together. Don't choose more than 1 and definetely not 2 colors other than black or white and refrain from planting little colored parts in a sea of non color like black. It makes the eye focus on... a valve stem cap, or a motor mount (why?).

That's my my experience and opinion on color design. Look at the overall scheme to choose a motor color, not just the frame.

I'm pretty much using black on the small pieces because it blends in with the frame. I had to paint the motor mounts, because I modified the stock ones to fit the new motor and had to weld them.

That's probably fine. The colors have a low brightness so it probably won't be a big deal like say yellow and red would be.

Choose colors that compliment each other too and have equal levels of saturation. For example if you use red for plastics, don't use purple for the frame. Red is a primary color and purple is a secondary. It will look like 2 differnet bikes glued together more than likely. That's why you have to be careful if you choose more than one color (besides black, white, grey).

But say you wanted to use a yellow frame because you really liked that color and you also liked the equally vibrant red plastics. To not wind up with a circus tent, and to make a cohesive color scheme, make sure your red plastics have designed graphics that give small splashes of yellow in them and accent the body lines. You're going to want to break up the graphics with darker non colors too so the thing doesn't look like a light bulb. Again, avoid splashing this and that small part with big color. Don't use a yellow gas cap and red breather tube. You also wouldn't want red motor mounts on the yellow frame. Then choose plenty of black or neutral for controls and small parts and maybe Al color for swingarm, and maybe balance that with the same on upper a-arms.

With a black-ish frame, unless you dig all black bikes, I'd choose one brightish color for plastics (I personally don't like blue on bikes) or white with bright color accents and brighten smaller components with chrome or polished Al. The motor is a large chunk and isn't necessarily a show piece... its lines aren't really designed to be focused on. I personally would maybe blend it into the frame with black or maybe match the color with an aluminum swingarm if black bored you to death.

I've seen red R motors with bling chrome and it can look good, but I would only do that in a red frame where it can still blend in. And, that much red would need to be balanced with some good doses of neutral.

This is almost like how I'm wanting to go with the quad, except with black seat and grips.

Also my frame is a lot darker. Here's a pic of the color.

But it looks like this in high light conditions.

Suzuki did blue and yellow and when they did it, the frame, engine and seat and graphics were all the exact same color blue. In home interiors they say to mate the wall paint to a rug or couch because it's easier to change paint color than fabric color. I think that ex would look more professionally done if the frame matched the seat. I think if you limit the amount of colors or at last shades you will be in better shape. Black is a neutral and easy to use but you're going to need something to tie the yellow and blue together. Graphics and seat are a good way to do that. Hope you have fun and good luck with it!

Nobody. It's bent straight back and I don't have an acetylene torch to heat it up, so I left it.

What do you think about these different graphics?

Or blue K&K tribals.

Get the cases painted the same color as the frame. Thats what I did with my R.

From my experiance, the best look is when you pick one color for the frame, and a few other pieces, like the cases, lower a arms, spindles. Then pick another color for the plastic, and also use that in a few other places too, like motor mounts, spindles, but not alot of parts, and not any big ones. Then use chrome, polished parts, and a 3rd color, ether black or white, depending on what would go with the colors you picked.
