How much do you guys think it should cost to get just my valves

adjusted on my 2000 440ex? My local Honda shop is trying to

charge me $97. I think that is crazy. Let me know what you've

payed. Thanks

I paid 60$ when i first bought my bike, but now after finding and reading the how to on it, its an easy procedure. I would just do it myself. I didnt get it done @ a honda dealership though but at another atv shop i go to.

Do it yourself and pay nothing. Do a search on here and you will find the procedure. It's pretty basic and doesn't take very long to do.

Yea I found how to do it on here. I just wanted to see what other shops are charging. I think my local shop is screwing me. They alreay got a s*** load of money from me to build my 440 a month ago. I don't think I'm going back to them. I'm doing it myself. Thanks.

yeah I found the thread on here and did it myself and now my valves chatter, I'm going to redo it it with a .004 both intake and exhaust and I will see how that goes.

my shop charged me a full $88 for a complete tune up...not just the valve adjustment.

so I re-valved my quad and it still smokes a little but I think it's all the oil in my exhaust... it was smoking bad before I decided to re-valve it. the valves don't chatter anymore and everything is running great. Plan on Riding tomorrow out at Ocotillo and hopefully it runs strong. I'm getting Deployed and when I get back I plan on putting the 440 kit on my quad so I'll have them check everything when I get back.

when they get warm...a light tick at idle is all you should be able to hear

Are the valve specs the same for a stock 400 and a 440ex? And does anyone know how much the dealer might charge in the chicagoland area? Thanks

Call your local shop??!!

Or you could just buy a book or print a search of it off this site and do it yourself. It takes longer to tear it down then the actual maintence does.

Try doing it again. My first time doing it I did it wrong. Make sure it is at top dead center exactly. I stuck a screw driver in the spark plug hole to double check myself.

I wouldn't got .004 both. Go buy what they say .001 can make a huge diffrence

yea, and the manuel says that they should be at .006 - .007 in.

.Time to adjust the clearance! Insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm, and the sub-rocker arm [figure 10] Loosen the 10mm lock nut, and adjust the screw in or out until there is slight drag on the feeler gauge. Tighten the lock nut while holding the adjuster screw. After tightening the lock nut recheck the valve clearance to make sure the adjusting screw didn't move. The exhaust valves should have .005 inches of clearance, and the intake valves should have .004 inches of clearance

This is straight off this sight!!!!

i stand corrected. i just looked at the manuel again, and it says .004-.005

maybe i looked at the wrong thing the first time

So does anybody know if the valves need to be adjusted different for a 440 kit and a cam? I had my buddy adjust mine (he put them to stock spec) and now it seems to cut out when getting on the throttle hard. Somebody told me the valves arent closing because they are too tight now?

i think it depends on the cam. it should be different then stock

Ok thanks, he said it was real far out from stock and i asked him if it needed to be a little further out because of the 440 and cam. He said he didnt think so but i have heard otherwise. Im just tryin to find a starting point to set them at now and go from there.

do you know what stage hotcam? i think if you search on their website you might be able to find it.

I will take a look, thanks! I think it is a stage 2 but i will have to check with my buddy i got the quad from.

Looks like stage 2 and stage 3 hot cams both call for 0.15mm exhaust and 0.13mm intake. Gonna try that.

for the stg 2 hotcam you go to .005 intake and .006 exhaust. it will make quite a bit more noise, i can hear the whine of the timing chain and the valves make a little more chatter. i installed a crf450 chain in mine idk if that makes much dif in the noise from the chain. its supposed to be HD compared to the ex chain.

^^^^^ thanks im gonna try that! ^^^^^
