View Full Version : Throttle - Twist or Thumb?

Just wondering how many of us use the thumb, or how many have converted to the twist?

If you have a twist, is it better - what advantages/dissadvantages

I run a twist, the way I see it is with a twist you have your whole hand griping the throttle and with a thumb throttle you are only griping with 4 fingers. Twist throttles are not for everyone tho! When I try to use a thumb throttle, my lower arm cramps up!:huh

I have one for my 400,i put it on rode with it 2 times and took it off. I am thinking of putting it back on,just alittle awkward at first.
i like it for hills but i hate it for wheelies.

A tiwst takes some getting used to if you haven't ridden one or ridden a bike before. I love mine.

Well, growing up on dirtbikes, riding sportbikes all my life, I'm wondering if I'd have more success with a twist grip. Dunno.
Are there conversion kits - or do you just buy a CR250 Twist assembly?

I think you would. I know I did. My thumb and arm would get very sore when using a thumb for a long time. With a twist that almost never happens.

I'm sure you could get the parts from another bike, but I just got a Motion Pro kit. Much easier.

Go with a kit, its much more painless.

I'm looking at the White Bros web page - http://www.whitebros.com/TRXPARTSLIST.html
But not sure what to order?
Motion Pro Throttle Cable 49-935 $20.60
Motion Pro Twist Throttle Assy. 49-933 $43.80

Can someone help here?

I have rode dirtbikes all my life before going to a quad. I can use the thumb throttle really well but the first time I raced an XC my thumb really cramped up. So I went out the next day and purchased a Motion pro vortex kit. I really like it, it still took a while to get used but i will never go back to thumb. I think quads should come stock with twist throttles.

i've got a motion pro throttle and cable that i used for one (1) ride this past weekend for about 2 hours total. it's now off my quad and for sale if you want it. $20 + shipping. still got a brand new-used once grip on it. retail on the throttle new is $37-40.

i never had a dirt bike, so i REALLY didn't like it.

youd be better off with a lawnmower throttle than a twist on a quad...lol thats how i feel anyway...you know which ones im talkin bout...the one with the turtle for the slow...and the jackrabbit for the wot...lol

twist all the way baby,
ive always run twist's i hate the thumb throttle.
i agree with jeff, with a twist your whole hand grasps the grip not just 4 fingers, the thing that i think is harder about a twist is going through whoops, it takes alot of practice.

yes quad o41! I was about to say that.

if you get ctossedaround in the whoops you end up holding on to the throttle WOT.
I have done this before and I try to just let go of the throtttle and ride it out with one hand on the bars but its hard and its nerve racking.....

I thought about goin back to thumb, I figured out a way to make the push reall easy on the thumb by cutting the spring inside the carb to make the pull lighter...

I do love twist for turns, You dont have to get in that awkward position when you make tight right hand turns....

im sticking with twist for now....

twist is really dangorous and awkward on a quad if you ask me. They can turn around and bite you in the ***** when you least expect it. Heck I should know I couldn't let off the throttle on my old 80 and ended up driving my bike through my garage window 4th gear pinned.:o

The only twisting I'm doing on my quad is twisting the top off a cold one after a hard ride.

Hey beerock - by cutting the spring in the carb does that hurt anything? Cause if not that is cool cause I have had bad luck with twist throttles they make me dislocate, bruise, and brake my bones. But with the thumb throttle my hand and arm gets sore.

I rode an R with a twist. It was my first time with a twist and a 2 stroke. I damn near killed myself. I tried to jump a tabletop that I jump on mine all the time. I had a death grip on that throttle, and I held it wide open. Did not mean to, and I did not face the jump. I landed on flat ground. It hurt. Piss on them twisters......

I agree with nausty,
I find I had better control with the thumb, I got used to the twist but I would prefer thumb over twisty any day of the week.
Just my opinion.
