he raced one outlaw race last year and took first....he was ridding one of those sunl 50 or btm 50...what ever you wanna call them....not bad to start out on for a lil one, well, after the race 2 weeks later it got stolen....he started ridding at 3....when he turned 4 he couldnt wait to join them other kids.....now i have got him the mongoos 50 ....it is a lil slower that the sunl 50, but it handles alot better....he will be back in the Southern MX series in the spring....i think he will do ok....

Cool! I just got my boys put together here in the shop and took it for a spin. VERY NICE MACHINE! I am going to leave the belt limiter thing in for awhile as his 1st race is next weekend and he won't have much time on it before then, but I am sure I will be removing it soon. The best thing is I got this animal for 845.00 brand new. Couldn't pass it up, and glad I didn't.

here is the mods i did....clip the green jumper wire on the cdi under the seat, removed the restrictor screw, removed the snorkal, grinded down the boss sleave on the front belt pullies, removed 2 of the 9gram weights out on the variator and replaced them with 6grams, changed the rear torq spring from a 1000 to a 1500, changed the clutch springs from 1000 to 2000, and changed the tired and wheels 16's on the rear and 18'son the front.....it will pull the front wheel up about an inch with him on it and get ....top out at around 35 to 40 with him and 30 with me.

I havent done any engine mods yet....gotta wait for the next class...

trailrunner77
04-30-2007, 09:12 PM
wheres this belt limter? and what restrictor screw? is that on the throttle housing on the bars?

ww228king
05-01-2007, 10:34 AM
yes the screw on the bars.... there is a thread on how to change the boss on here....it is how to change the boss on the mongoose 90, but it is the same process as on the 50. I didnt buy another boss, i just grinded my down smooth. When you do this, it will try to run up to higher gear too quick and bog the engine. So you will have to start removing some weights on the variator. I started out by removing two of the 9gram weights one across from each other. It ran great with my 40lbs son. But when i start to change the torq and clutch springs i had to change the weights a lil more. You may need to check the exhaust pipe also at the header, some people say that there is a restrictor in there too, but i didnt find one on mine. i also checked the carb, but didnt find one in there either. What year do you have?

What can I do easily to just make it a tiny bit faster for right now? He is not experienced enough yet to go all out-doesnt like to use the brakes LOL, but he needs just a tad bit more as he is 99% of the time pegged to the rev limiter.

trailrunner77
05-01-2007, 09:00 PM
did you snip the green wire? sounds like that is a quicky, but if he ain't using brakes then he don't need to go any faster.?

QUADROOKIE
05-01-2007, 09:25 PM
Well he is getting better after tonight. I set up abouta 1/4 mile course through the yard and had his sister race him around in front of and along side him and he ran into her once going around the shed when she slowed to turn he kept right on going and smacked her pretty good LOL! Then we had "The Talk" and he did much better after that. He just thinks he is so cool he is holding up 1 fiinger like he is taking the checkered falg at a gncc lmao! He will be fine I am sure, but just want a tiny bit more power for his first race. We will see how it goes, then think about all out mods. I was hopingb you would be the gineau pig and let me know the tricks LOL!

yelp just clip the green wire would be the first

QUADROOKIE
05-02-2007, 08:05 PM
I clipped the green wire and the rev limiter still kicks in, and if anything, it almost seems like it runs worse now than before? What's up with that?

trailrunner77
05-02-2007, 08:21 PM
she aint' gonna race until this fall, maybe @ monty....

im not gonna turn mine loose until she gets better on the binders, i don't want a crushed quad or daugther her first race. i want her to have fun!

QUADROOKIE
05-02-2007, 08:42 PM
I agree. He just needs a tad bit more speed, I want to unleash all the power then just control it with the throttle screw.

ww228king
05-03-2007, 06:03 AM
Are the ends of the green wires touching anything? Have you removed the restricter screw? Whats gonna happen when you clip the green wire is it will rev up quicker, meaning quicker take off than stock. Your topend will not change untill you do some changes in the tranny. What are you trying to do.....have more take off or more topend?

QUADROOKIE
05-03-2007, 06:55 AM
Thr screw is all the way out. I put electrical tape around the ends of the wires after I cut them. It seems to bog a bit on take-off, then runs just the same as before-rev limiter and all. Also seems to idle less smoothly? The rev limiter does sound a little different than before but could be just me. I realize I need to take the restrictor out of the tranny to go faster, just that I have a race sunday and am not sure how much of a job it is and dont want to be down to the last second for the race.

QUADROOKIE
06-19-2007, 08:17 PM
Ok. I opened up the belt housing and have it all apart. Can I just take the boss to a grinding wheel and take about half of the "lip" off the outside edge to start out with? Also, if I take it all the way down flush, will it still pull ok even if I don't change any weights or springs? Thanks.

ww228king
06-20-2007, 04:14 AM
it depends on the weight of the rider....you can try it with out first and see how it acts.....but you may have to take a weight or two out. you have to play with the tranny to see how it acts witht the rider, the person that is going to be riding it must be the test person!!!!!!!! never try to test it yourself.....it will act different ....if you want more stall with out buying clutch springs, just drill the clutches out some to add some stall....you can find that on the hetrick site.....i drill mine out and added 2000 RPM springs. So i got about 2400 RPM stall. You can try to gring half of it down, but i would grind it all because it will cause the belt to ride on a smaller piece of metal on the take off and not get a full grip. Plus when you grind it smooth with the rest, it will allow the front to have a smaller ratio so it will have a harder pull off the start .....i can take pics if you need, my son's is down right now waiting on a helicoil kit so i can fix his stripped cylinder bolt....i took a jitter bug sander to the head and went from 125psi compression to 145psi then stripped one of his bolts when i was double checking....or i might make a video....let me know make sure you are grinding the right way.....dont shorten the boss .....only grind down smooth with the rest....

QUADROOKIE
06-20-2007, 06:35 AM
Well, he weighs maybe 50 lbs with all his gear on. If you had a pic of how the boss looks after being ground down that would be great! Also, I didn't pay attention as it came apart-does the belt actually ride on the boss or does it ride directly on the shaft between the 2 pulleys?

ww228king
06-20-2007, 07:57 AM
well, i am at work right now so i cant send pic......the belt start off riding on the boss then as the engine revs it will ride on the pullies ....going all the way to the top as the pullies slide together. with the stock boss, it keeps the pullies from sliding together and keeping the belt on the boss, which keeps you stuck in low speed....the boss should be smooth from one end to the other, dont make it shorter....i will see if i can send something tonight....just put the boss on a belt sander and keep rotating it untill that 1/4" ripple is down flush with the rest, then slide that part into the variator to make sure it fits and slids in and out good.

QUADROOKIE
06-20-2007, 08:11 AM
Ok, gotcha! Thanks!!

I don't have a belt sander though-only a bench grinder. Will that work if I am careful?

ww228king
06-20-2007, 08:18 AM
Maybe this will help. Something i put together.

ww228king
06-20-2007, 08:20 AM
that should still work......just make sure it slides in and out of the variator good.

QUADROOKIE
06-21-2007, 06:35 AM
Ok, I ground it down. Had a hard time getting it smooth, so I put the ground down end into the pulley so the belt would ride on the true machined part of the boss. This thing rips now! Thanks for all the help!

ww228king
06-21-2007, 12:43 PM
no problem !!! did you have to take any weights out.....just something to play with

QUADROOKIE
06-21-2007, 12:48 PM
No, I didnt mess with any weights yet. It still pulls hard out of the turns and off the line, but maybe just has a tiny flat spot in the midrange before it accelerates to top speed, but not enough to mess with at the this point I dont think. Maybe next year when he is a little heavier it will become an issue. I had to screw in the throttle screw a little though cuz he was getting a little wild LOL! He thinks he is really big shot now.:D Oh what fun!

Thanks again!

ww228king
06-21-2007, 01:27 PM
lol..... so you had to put the govener back in......did you ever clip the green wire too? My son's had that same flat spot, that is why i played with the weights a little. Glad it all worked out for you. If you need any more help let me know.

QUADROOKIE
06-21-2007, 02:30 PM
Yeah, he just kept going down the hill (slope) in the yard and revving it as fast as it would go and his mom was about to have a heart attack so I slowed it back down to about halfway between where it was, and full out. He needs to learn to use the brakes a little better, and after he races with it like this once I will open it back up. Yeah, I clipped the green wire. This thing is damn near as fast as my daughters LT80. I am very happy with it.

ww228king
06-21-2007, 02:48 PM
lol....oh with a few more little mods it will smoke the LT80....you can play with the tranny and make it out run the LT80.....I wish they made the brake handle a little bit closer to the grips....my son has to stretch to grab them....

trailrunner77
06-26-2007, 08:37 PM
im gonna get that asv F3 shorty on that lil mongoose someday, need to buy a yz kill button, gonna have to get rid of the stock start housing.

the new setup will just have a key ign. and yzkill button used as a start button. the way the lever pulls gets into the stock housing. i got to do something she's gettn wild on the gas. not really using the brakes that much.....

she gonna race later this year on it. Not gonna mess with the boss/variator. just gonna go out and let her race it in stock form. She's only 4 1/2

if any one has the wiring diagram on that can ya see if i just need to wire the 2 wires on the brake switch together. I think that will work.

Does anybody know if any of these mods (ww28king has listed ) work on the 07 4 strokes. I have taken the spacer off of the front pulley. It doesnt have the same cdi ( green wire looped ) as previous years. I love the quad but would love to have more topend. Thanks

ww228king
06-30-2007, 09:58 AM
havent seen the 4t model up close yet.....jack the back end up, take the pully cover off, rev the motor to the max and see if the belt is going all the way to the top of the front pullies......
if not: make sure that the boss is not the restricted one
try heavier changing the cdi
check the carb to see if it has a limiter in there

FishPimp
06-30-2007, 01:13 PM
Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what you meant by this "try heavier changing the cdi ". Are there any aftermarket cdi's for the 4 stroke. I havent found any. Thanks

ww228king
06-30-2007, 02:46 PM
oops..lol....i meant try heavier weights....i not to sure about the 07 models....i do know one thing about the 07 4 stroke models, the kawasaki kfx 50 is the same ...so if you can find mods for them it should be the same ...but i will be looking to see if i can find something....is it acting like it is hitting a rev limiter or running out of horsepower?

FishPimp
06-30-2007, 07:56 PM
I think it is hitting a rev limiter. It has an extra ( 3 prong ) connection stting right beside the cdi. It doesnt connect to anything and I am not sure where it is coming from. It has the same color wires that are going into the cdi box. Not sure what it is there for. Would changing the front sprocket and front tire size give me any extra speed? I have a 6 year old riding it and if I could get maybe 5-10 more mph I would be pleased. Thanks

FishPimp
07-01-2007, 03:03 AM
Also, are these quads single speeds ( one gear ). I am new to the CVT on minis. Thanks

ww228king
07-01-2007, 05:44 PM
they are automatics....they are always changing ...the belt rides up on the front pullies to and down on the rear pullies, changing the ratio so when you hit the gas it should start in low and ride up to high....it has got to be a cdi out for it...a 400ex cdi fit my sons perfect

mecheech
07-14-2007, 04:57 PM
U put a 400ex cdi on a 2-stroke Mongoose 50? Was there a noticable difference. Wentz had told me to also go with a new ignition, PVL I think, but it was around 400 bones. But we might have to try it before our winter series starts up.

ww228king
07-15-2007, 10:03 AM
i had a few laying around here, and had noticed that the plugs looked the same. So i plugged it in and it fired up and ran great. I didnt notice that much differance, but it seemed to have a little bit more take off to me. It could just be me. I run it for now and save his stock with the green wire clipped. i will save it for back up. I wouldnt have gone to buy one, i just had it laying in the shop.

mecheech
07-16-2007, 04:30 PM
U running a stock one or high rev, wonder if we would even see a difference on the high rev?

ww228king
07-17-2007, 06:21 AM
A stock engine mongoose 50 can only rev to 8000 rpm even with the green wire clipped. With the green wire not clipped, it can only rev to 6500 rpm. The stock 400ex rev box stops at 8800rpm. So topend will never change. If you have done any engine work then you may need to keep the the stock mongoose rev box with the green wire clipped or look for an after market box. I ran BIG GUN UNLIMITED on a 400ex and it did great. I know it sounds wiered that a 2 stroke 50 and a 400ex has amost the same rpms.

Well, as some of you guys may already know...I had a little bit of problem with the KB a-arms that I got. I was mislead and the 10 3/4" shocks were too short by 2 1/4" . So it looks like i need some 13" shocks... Funds are low and can't get them yet so I had to make the existing shocks work.. I ordered +3 +2 a-arms and was told that it made the ATV 3" wider....so i figured 1 1/2" each side.....they were wrong....they made the mongoose 6" wider ...and brought the tires forward 2" to clear the nerf bars...

I will be taking the quad to work next week to weld the pegs on ..

Is the newer 4 stroke Mongoose the same physical size as the 2 stroke model? I was looking at one for my grandson that is 4 1/2 and the Mongoose seems a little bigger than other 50cc ATVs. Looks like the 4-5 year old fits fine on the 2 stroker :)
I've seen reviews on the 2 stroke but not the 4 stoke- anybody heard anything good or bad about the 2007 model?

I run stock wheel base an my sons Kymco 90. Early on we tried different swing arm lenghts but we just lost traction. So after "many "swingarm lenght changes at 1/4" at a time we finally wound up back to the stock length before it would hook up.
And this was with the snow hogs. But in the middle of the season last year WPSA (rest in peace LOL) we switched to the stock rear maxxis that come on the 90 kymco. We did this because the snow hogs just dont hook up that well. But now with the extra traction we are going to add about 1" back into the swing arm. The front a-arms are also the stock offset. I just thought as we tried to lenghten the wheel base it just didnt balance well. The machine is 48" wide.
As for you chain slipping issues? Run as big of a rear spocket as you can. And adjust with a bigger front. This will get you more teeth to grab. I dealt with this years ago on Jesses quad and we can run no smaller then a 42 rear. But the 90 is making alot more power. And I can get a ton more travel out of the clutch to compensate.
I cant remember the sprocket size that we used on my daughters 50 ( her quad was 48" wide, 16" front shocks and 12.5 rear also)
The biggest improvement you can make for the chain slipping is lower the rear of the motor. You want the counter shaft centered with the swing arm bolt. This will maintain a more uniform chain tension. It will also prevent the counter shaft from snapping off or a short bearing life in the tranny. Bud Fisher has a rear tranny mount that will add a bearing closer to the sprocket and lower the moter. Bolts right on.
You might not be seeing a ton of issues just yet but with the longer rear shock its just a matter of time. As the quad gets rode harder it will get worse unless it fixed. And if the day comes that you bolt a 90 in there it wont make one lap without these changes.
Bud also has a 70 piston that Wiesco made just for that bike. Bore the stock cylinder and lots more power. Darrin Wentz's son has raced the National tt series with the Kymco 50 and won many championships.
OOPPS! I just noticed in your sig. that you already have the motor dept. handled

thanks alot for all the info.....sounds great!!!!!

right now it is a 70cc ... the kit came from polini...

it looks like i need a shorter shock or something ... because the chain is riding on the swingarm almost all the time... will the 4 stroke 90 have more power than his 2 stroke 70? I will try those things that you spoke of... where did you get those dual a-arms? NICE!

The bike make alot of power and handles great for him... but he is scared to get big air now... where did you get the sprockets?

thanks!

Well I am not to sure how the 90 as a 90 will run against the 70 2 stroke. But as a 125 big head, big valve engine there is night and day differance.
Rebal gear 931-788-1617 has any sprocket you will need. Or call John Burkman (burkmanracing) SC. at 704-813-1021 and he deals alot with racing Kymco's. He bought the only other kymco that looks like Jesse's off of me. It was a 50 but I think its a 125 now. He is looking for a rider to race it at the nationals with us.

Any questions feel free to call me at 440-563-6043

Well, I think the time has come....

Checking interest...
Time to move up.... I was gonna keep it and build it up more, but I think that I have made my mind up...I think.
The tread has all the info on the quad.. let me know if you have any questions...
And the front end diving on him has stopped... he started to lean back more.
It will make a great single A-arm racer.

I will wait a week or so before I post it in the for sale area...

any offers?

So what did you end up deciding? Apex or Drr? I finally sold my son's 50 this week and am now trying to make the same decision. I had the Kymco scootin' pretty good. He raced it about a dozen times and had a blast. but now it's time to move up.

I would get a drr for a younger kid because they are a lot smaller than an apex.

6: 16" Snow Hogs mounted on Douglas wheels (80% tread) - $80

Man I'd hate to this quad taken apart,,, Wish my 4 year old could ride it but it is way beyond his capabilities and my older sons DRR will be here next week. Good luck with the sale.. I am trying to talk one of my friends into getting it for their boy.
