I've got stuck a few times on my 300 Fourtrax. One was because of some deep ruts that caused me to bottom out in soft mud. The other was in deep sloshy mud that came up to the top of the fenders.

i've got a stock kfx400 (cept nerfbars) and it's a great bike.

more power than my 400ex when stock.

geared high, though. doesn't take a 'bogging' too well.

revs nice and high.

and what makes a good mudder a good mudder is tires (buy some good ones) power (you got it stock) and driver (up to you)

Z's are great man. Dunno about your mud plans. I mean yeah they will go threw mud. But not to a extreme extent.

the mud i go throw is mostly just about a half a foot deep with mostly hard bottoms . anywho if i go to buy a used z400 an 05' what should i look out for ? and if i do get one how much more cluth working do you have to do ? last one . what is the stock gearing ? i seen that nosliw said its high gearing so what sprocket to change to make the gearing lower and what size etc. ?

thanks alot for the posts

ya zs are good bikes. real reliable. the bad years for frames were the 03s. new frames got put on in 04. the way to spot the bad frames is if the grab part is part of the frame, its weak. if the grab bar is bolt on then its a newer frame. in 05 they got better front shocks and a bigger carb. id take one over a 400ex, but after selling my 03 z400 for a yfz ill never go back. only miss the soft seat.;)

i had mine set up for the woods, and it did great for just that. dropping 1 tooth on the front sporket works wonders for these bikes. lots of low end grunt but you top out a little faster. i dropped from the stock 14T to a 13T. stock they lack bottom end, but a new filter and rejetting with no airbox lid gives it some balls for cheap.

Just wondering, why are they so cheap?? I was looking in the tell n' sell and I seen like 2 or 3 going from like 2000 to like 2500, newest one being an 04 i think... Its kinda making me want to get one...

They have good power.. but if you like to wrench then go nuts. My friend has had alot of problems with his..eltrical..blown motor..head gasket went.. and now the timing chain is being gay.. Have fun. My experince around them.

the z400 is a really good bike, but i would rather take a 400ex any day. The z400 is reliable and will start up in the coldest temps. but the 400ex is just a little more reliable. Ive heard a bunch of stuff about the z400 frames breaking but, ive taken my friends z off some pretty big jumps a bunch of times, and so has he and nothing has happened. And the suspension is all stock to boot.

the z400 is a really good bike. In the coldest tempuratures in VT. the bike wills tart up right away. But, then again i would rather take the 400ex because, its better in the trails and its a little more reliable. But, yes i have heard things about the z's frame and i think it is all untrue. Me and my friend have taken his z off of a bunch of jumps and nothing has happened to the frame. Case closed the z is an amazing bike.

I have both. My 400ex has LT suspension and a 416 kit. The KFX400 (same as the Z) still faster then my 400. (the KFX has afull yoshi pipe) The egromics (sp?) of the KFX 400 feel bigger. I guess What I am trying to say is that I am 5 10 and the KFX fits me better. The 400 almost feels too small.
