ok so in mid november i bought a new o-ring chain for 90$, i have only ridden it for like 10 hours tops. The first 3 rides my chain didn't need to be tightened, then the next 2 rides i had to tight the chain 1/2 of a turn. Then today when i get home i have to tighten it 3/4 of a turn so im like wtf? then i inspect my chain and i see its all cracked like where the pin holes are is cracked? so what causes this? (see pic) its on a 300ex

Sorry for the long post

what brand of chain was it? ive never personally seen this happen on a chain but its not entirely impossible. metal when it gets cold gets brittle, you said november so depending on the temp it might have had something to do with it. or you could have just be the lucky one to get a falty chain.

It could be something with alignment. Check your carrier bearings for any play.

Are you tightning the chain all the way tight or are you leaving some slack? the Chain needs about 3/4 inch of slack.

Sounds like it was a stamping imperfection that caused a weakness. Give the chain company a call.. i bet they'll replace it.

But as said above, hopefully you're putting enough slack in the chain. That can tear carrier bearings, countershaft bearings up in a hurry if you don't.

If that is the only one cracked, remove it and put in a master link.

If there are others cracked maybe your chain is too tight..

The D.I.D atv x-ring you can get from Rockymountain for like $54-$56 for your quad. If your thinking about going with the Sidewinder chain you'll have to order directly from them and the Ti-moly chain is about tripple the price of the D.I.D i think mine was $160 might have been more. Sidewinder also makes lower cost chains also, that are high in quality. they are very friendly there, just let them know your needs and they'll hook ya up
