so... out trail riding yesterday with a buddy of mine

5 minutes into our ride my hands went completely numb, no feeling, couldnt modulate throttle/brakes etc at all

well, we were heading back to call it a day about 20 min later.. we get caught in a nasty area with slopes leading down into about a 10-15 foot rock ravine

anyhow, my buddy shoots up the side makes it no problem. I on the other hand start climbing and because my hands werent functioning properly i blipped the throttle and it hooked up on a rock wheelied just enough to where i had no steering and down the hill the atv and i went

i tried to bail but the momentum was already there

my right hand is swollen about 2x over.. back is scraped to hell

my assets are scraped to hell too

the atv... rolled on top of me so I basically "tossed" it the rest of the way down the hill and it landed upright

the only damage on the atv... the rear seat had a few rocks jammed underneath it and one of the rims is now scratched

I am amazed number 1 I didn't break anything (that i know of) in my hand/wrist but also that the atv didnt get injured at all..

anyhow moral of my story is, it sucks typing one handed while working and #2 I HATE RIDING IN 10 DEGREE WEATHER

oh, but the jetting specs you guys helped me with were dead on. Thanks a bunch she was running great before I bit the big one

appreciate it... im glad my wrist didnt snap or something more serious.. i doubt anyything is broken just superswollen & sore

all is good as soon as i can move my hand again and it gets a tad warmr ill be out shredding again

it was so lame... a simple small hill climb (way smaller than an actuall hill) and because i couldnt move my fingers i wreck lol

tough break but hey... i am still in awe the atv isn't total'd... it didnt even hurt anything aside from scuffing the rim up in about a 2" section

thanks for the support :) now I can have the wife help me mod it some more while my hand isnt usable

There's something to be said for haveing the right gear for the right weather. I go riding all the time in sub-freezing weather for hours at a time, but I have full military ECW (extreme cold weather) gear. But at a minimum, good ski gloves will cost you like 20 bucks and keep your hands working.

i only feel the cold when i'm done for the day durning the ride i'm haveing to much fun to feel cold, but its hell when i stop and settle down

I wish I felt like both of you above, but my hands and feet always get to where they feel like they are frozen and I can hardly even move them...What kind of gear you using?

jokester i wear a white t-shirt, my WVU hoodie, jeans, black steel toe combat boots and my tactical glove i use when i shoot and i'm out in the field for the army, helmet, and goggles, i also have a normal body temp of 102 so i'm always warm that might have something to do with it but just the fun of riding i don't think of the cold something i learned in the army just don't think about it, pain, cold, tiredness its all mental for me and a 102 temp body

ya I think I'm going to start wearing some kind of other boots other than my normal fox boots I wear... I can go for a while before I start getting cold but once I do its pretty much all over unless I start riding as hard as I can and using my hands and stuff a bunch to keep my circulation going.. cause most of the time I'm with people that always go slow so the cold starts to settle in...

jokester look for a military gor-tex cold weather combat boot, black or tan, all of us here in WV are in the army and wear our extra cold weather boots and no one has a problem and there waterproof for the mud and snow also and u can get steel toe ones 2 if u need it

I sooo wish it was that warm here again!!! I'm starting to get sick of this waking up and it being 14* outside and getting up to a whole 30* or so!! Can't wait until spring!!!

01-15-2007, 07:13 AM
When its cold like 10 degres and i ride my hands always swell up from the cold.

blown331
01-15-2007, 07:19 AM
i always wear all my riding gear

I just have a pair of fox race gloves meant for warmer weather so they are vented and caused my hands to basically go instantly numb as soon as I rode my first 100 feet.

all in all it was a bad day.. ill be getting some new gloves because i certainly do not waant this to happen again

01-15-2007, 07:21 AM
I use snow cross gloves. They lock out all the wind and have hard rubber all on top so they keep hands worm and their just like mx gloves.

blown331
01-15-2007, 07:42 AM
thanks ill be looking into a pair

They aren't cheap, but you can ride in 0 degree weather and get soaked with no worries. The cheapest way to get them is to join, lol.

first question did you hurt the quad. lol jk. good thing your not seriously hurt. i think the 10 degree weather is fun. me and my friend all go hill climing and stuff when we have snow makes it harder buts going down the hill backwards can be scary. we starte to put hand warmers in our gloves when we ride. but then we end up riding in the bad weather at like 4 in the morning and ticking ppl off

blown331
01-15-2007, 12:43 PM
well i think it was a combination of things

my buddies brand new yfz 450 was causing us a ton of problems and without a space heater in my garage yet we were freezing while ripping his bike apart, rejetting, etc.. then the ride out to where we went, freezing, then the lack of proper gear (ie gloves to withstand the cold)

the atv is perfect, i cant believe it

01-15-2007, 01:06 PM
Go out on the lake once when its cold and windy.

anderson3064
01-15-2007, 03:19 PM
i wear a pair of carhart bibs and a carhart jacket with a hoodie underneath. have on normal socks and long jons with som normal fox riding gloves and i dont get cold till i stop. and if your hands get that cold just put them by your exhaust and warm them up so you can get your butt home

last time we brought our jet boat out we were on Havasu and ended up in the middle of the lake while a storm was rolling in

10 ft swells in a 19' 100 mph boat

it wasn't fun when basically waves face check you over the bow

That sucks. I was on Lake Erie last fall for some late night fishing when a storm rolled in on us. We started to head the 5 miles back to our cottage when the engine died on his 14 ft boat. We had to use the trolling motor in 5 ft white caps to make it back.. in the pitch dark. Needless to say he got flashlights and stuff in case it happends again.

damn sounds like you had lots of fun that night...lol jk...
how long did it take you guys before you got back?

DF400ex
01-15-2007, 08:31 PM
It took about 2 hours to get back. We had to start paddling for the last mile or so cuz the battery started going dead. But like I always say, if it don't kill ya, it makes for a great story, lol.

blown331

About a month or so

jokester
01-17-2007, 12:11 PM

blown331
01-17-2007, 01:00 PM
actually.. i took a couple oxycodones yesterday which also have a good amount of ibuprofin supposedly. My swelling has gone down tremendously today. My right ring finger knuckle is pretty much the only thing from closing my hand and making a fist

ive pumped myself up on vitamins and have been drinking a lot of green tea and a few of my herbal pills i like to take when I get hurt

im sure thats why its starting to do better... its almost been a week so we'll see :)

jokester
01-17-2007, 04:51 PM
thats good the swelling is going down a lot, maybe you'll even be able to ride hard again before a months time!!
