I have a stock '01 400ex. The guys I ride with are on build R's,
cannodales, raptors, etc.
I want to build the motor this winter (actually want to send
it off and have someone do it) I would love to go with the
465 stoker (I think the one I was looking at was trinity) I just
have a bad feeling I'm gonna have problems with it.
What do you guys think is the most powerfull "kit" out there
that I can atleast get a couple/three years out of.
I ride the oregon dunes and woods ride in Washington state.
I like to do the trails, drag race.....I guess I like it all!
This is my first time on this site so hopefully I'm doin it right.

Mostly the O.R.V park, rock candy, and up delphi near Olympia.
I also have a couple friends with some pretty nice backyard
tracks.

I think after upgrading my bike twice, I am convinced that I want a 500 Stroker with the works.

You have to decide what kind of bike you want, where you want to ride it, and what type of riding you will be doing most of.

You can go for satifactory power improvement to totally impressed and your checking account can go from alot to a little.

I have tried several different upgrades, and each time it was cool at first, but then not enough, so this time, I am going for the max.

I had the same problem your going through. I researched 440 and found out that they have head gasket problem and have a tendency to snap the stock conneting rod if you go over 11.1 compression ratio. I talk to TMM TOM MILLER MOTORSPORTS, he recommened 440 stroker. The bore is.080 and the stock crank is stroked to get 440 cc from this combination. New shorter corrillo connecting rod, welded and relocated pin on crank and an engine with more torque and a broader power band. Tom Miller Motorsports 901-986-0893 3885 Highway 22 Huntington TN 38344

I think this is the way to go. This is what I'm going to do to my 2002 400ex.

I just want to go fast, whatever I'm doing.
I'm willing to give up around $3500 and from what
I hear, that should get me a pretty good start.

You hit the poker runs at capitol forest and tahuya? That is about the only time I am down there. I ride alot on private tracks and the Naches trail when I am not doing the poker runs.

I've also heard the 440 stroker is good choice.
I just don't think it'll be enough???

I haven't done any poker runs yet. Will probably make a couple
runs next year.

I would have to agree, for reliability I think that would be the best choice, for just flat hauling, it won't impress you as much.

i had the same ordeal except i am one step further than you and got the 500 from four stroke tech. it is the same one he runs in his GNCC rides. i love it. i can definatly kill raptors and put the hurt on some of the so called built r's. they hate it but not as bad as the yamaha riders. i am for sure this motor is going to last for a lot of riding. i put it togather and havenmt had to do anything except add fuel to go riding. and mickey has decent turn around times, even being a top race engine builder.

sincerely,
satisfied 500 owner!

The people who know me already know what i am about to post, but here i ga anyway. Even though i do not have it myself yet (not long now though) I like the 465 stroker if done right it is a very reliable motor. I know for a fact that For Dirt Only in Johnstown OH build great big bore motors. They have built many strokers and they are mean and reliable. You can call Mike at fdo and he will be more than happy to explain what he does to the motor to you. It is not a set kit youi have options like how much porting you want and what compression piston you want. His Price is lower than what you posted, but you would have to call him to get an exact price. Like I said he will be more than happy to talk to you. The phone # is 740-967-1078 and ask for Mike to get ahold of him it would be best to call him in the evening eastern time.

How much time do you have on it?
Do you have a number or website for four stroke tech.?

I really love my 400ex. I have rode my buddies cannondale
and I did like the top end power but I like the feel of the 400
better. I haven't rode the suzuki but I can't imagine getting rid
of my honda and getting a suzuki.

Save up the cash for a crf450 dirtbike motor, very reliable and all you need is motor mounts, i think eastcoast atv does a kit.

All i have to say is be sure to get what you want the first time,,,i first went with a 416 and it just wasnt enough so i jumped all the way to a 505! Basically I wasted money on the 416!! As far as price goes TC is going to be the best price and i have never once heard anything bad about him or his motors!! Except they go fast as he!! He told me 6 weeks too which is another story but i think if you send it in during winter it wont take very long!!

Thanks for all the information. I think I'll go with the
500. I still need to call around but it sounds like what
I want.
Thanks again,

If your thinking of a 440 stroker kit contact Powroll. They are fourstroke specialists and are located in Redmond OR. they have a great website if you just to check out what they have. They offer a 440 stroker kit that comes with lots of goodies.

For the money, i would definately go with the crf450 motor. You will want liquid cooling for everything your doing. Besides if you do do the 465 or 505 which is a huge gain over stock , you will be running much hotter than stock. For me i drag alot and can tell a big difference in power drop of as my bike runs hot. As far as i can say, if your not going with the 450 motor then i would just go with the 505 because that way you will definately be happy although the 465 is good..:devil :devil

how difficult is it to transplant a CRF engine into a 400 frame. i was also wondering how you reached 505? what bore/stroke combo is that? what else have you done engine hop up wise? you said you drag race how well do you do?

didnt really read all the thread, But if you've got $3500 to spend, why not a YZF or CRF? Then you could sell the out of date SOHC, air-cooled 400ex motor and make back a few bucks.

ridinthedunes
09-25-2002, 05:40 PM
Can I get a new crf? How much?
How would it compare to the 500 stroker?

stocktires
09-25-2002, 05:43 PM
I'd say go with YZF, but if you start asking which is better, your gonna get about 3 pages of argueing (sp?)
The yfz or crf would be WAYYY more reliable

Not sure what the diff. is???
What about power diff. with the 500?
