i have a 400ex swinger would it work on my R if so would there be any advantages over my 86?? i've been looking at 89-89 swingers on ebay but i'll be switching to a 350 by summer and i was thinking it might be a little short. what do you guys think?? and i will be in the woods a lot.

I'm not sure about the 400ex swinger working but I think that its a NO. As far as you mentioning the 89 style swingers for your 86 then you can't go that route either. The newer style is different, on your 86 the motor mounts with the singarm bolt and that mount that goes on the swinger. On the 89 style the the motor mount for the back of the motor is on the frame. So in short if you used the 89 swinger that doesnt have the capability of using that motor mount then you would need to fab up a mount on your frame for the motor, which has been done and actually there is a frame on ebay right now that has this exact mod done to it. You can use the the 86 style on an 89 frame but not the other way around. Hope this helps.

yeah i saw the white frame posted on here with the mod done it looks easy enough but it will mess up my powder coat. but how would the 88-89 swinger perform and i know itr is lighter how much weight is saved???

Not sure how much weight is saved. I have an 88 that I'm using an 86 swinger on and I like it. I have an 88 aluminum one that I'm going to put on my bike and as far as weight I'm not sure theres much of a difference. Its just that the new one is shorter by an inch and I think it looks better with the aluminum is why I'm changing.

88-89 aluminum swingarms are 1 inch shorter then the 86-87 swingers. That one inch makes a big difference in the way it handles. The aluminum swinger is a little lighter, but is also easier to break.
