Well, after having starting problems I ordered a Keihin 42 pilot jet. When I was putting it in I noticed that the pilot jet already in there was the exact same size but was marked a 38. Are the jets supposed to be the same size? or is the 38 made by a different company and is actually the same size jet?

The bike might have been jetted by the previous owner ('04 400ex) is what I'm thinking.

The pilot jet marked 38 that came out had this type marking at the top along with the number 38. The main jet is marked with the same marking and is numbered as a 148. Ideas??

Edited to say that the bike is 100% stock, no intake/filter/pipe/etc.

your fine, the symbol at the top is a "K" stands for Kehein(think thats how you spell it) our bikes have different Series jets that you can use a 21 or 26. they may look the same but the 42 has bigger holes on the outside of it near the bottom half of the jet those bigger holes are what makes it a 42, length shouldnt matter as long as you got a 42 sized pilot jet for a kehein carb. if i'm wrong someone will chime in :)

length must not matter considering the 42 pilot i just put in my bike today is about 1/4" longer or so than my stock 38...

Either series will work fine, cgndhhh is right about everything. Stock jetting is 38 pilot and 148 main ,2 1/4 turns out on the fuel screw, needle on 3rd slot from the top.
