View Full Version : Lack of power 05 LTZ 250

Here is my story, spent a few days riding in the Oregon dunes with my 12 yr old son and had a blast. I was on my 06 KFX 400 and he on his 05 LTZ 250. I realized real quick that his LTZ 250 was under powered for climbing hills, unless he got a good run at them! He has a stage 1 kit with a K&N filter but didn’t seem to make a difference. I’m putting a Yoshimura full system on it and removing the Air Box Lid.

My question is what else can I do to this thing to get some more torque and or power out of it and does anyone know a company that makes a Big Bore Kit for the LTZ 250?

Thanks & Happy Trails
:p

its the nature of the beast.

the ltz250 is for beginners, my daughter has one and it is pretty
gutless.

im sure you can get a little more out of it but imo you will be happier with a step up the ranks.
(maybe give him the kfx and get you a new 450?)

just a hint ;)

suck it up for now and in 2 years give him the 400 and if u want to stay with a kawi get a kfx450, i just cant see putting alot more into a ltz250 beside pipe and air filter, i guess you could up the compression, theres not much use in boring it out bigger, i would just get a 11:1 piston for it if they make it and a cam

What tires are you using on it out in the dunes.

Sand Sharks, Sandstars, basically all your standard tires are all way to agressive for the 250.

Look into a set of Skat-Trak 6-paddle gliders. That's what I use on my 300ex out in Wynoka. Having ridden in both Wynoka and the Oregon dunes the Oregon dunes are a bit more forgiving on paddle selection, but your standard 8 paddle V tire is going to kill the little 250.

i kinda go with that.
if you have the money step up to a 450 and give him the kfx
if you don;t have the money sell the z250 and just for a extra 100 bucks buy him a 300ex..then u can hop up that jmo

Mehh.. take it from a 300ex rider.. the last thing he wants to do is go from the lt250 to a 300ex for the dunes. The 300ex is a torqu machine. In the dunes you need HP. All he's gonna do on the 300ex is dig holes.. lol.

If he does anything quad wise.. if the kids at least 5ft tall & 100lbs, I'd go with another z400 and add a rekluse clutch. ;) Could leave it bone stock to keep it tame, but enough HP to go up the dunes safely.

In my experience less HP can be more dangerous than more HP.

A blaster IMHO is better in the dunes than a 300ex is also.

The 300ex is great for towing broken down dunebuggies out of the dunes.. but it's not that great for dune play. ;)

Yea.. mistype.

meant z250.
However doesn't the ute 250 and z250 have the same motor? ;)

I know the difference.. and if he had an lt250r power in the dunes wouldn't be an issue. ;)

He's talking about the Suzuki equivalent of the TRX250EX. A barebone 250cc shaft driven utility motor on a tube frame w/ sport plastics ;)

All I was trying to say is that a 300ex isn't a worthwhile upgrade in the dunes. A 400ex is the point where the quad becomes easy to ride in the dunes. Don't have to make multiple high speed long distance runs at the hill to make it to the top. Just gas it and go.

I upgraded to the z400 since that's what he has, what he knows, and what a rekluse clutch is availiable in. ;)

the 300ex is a step up from the ltz250 for sure.

the old 250x has more than the ltz250 or 250ex.

it sounded like he may have been a little brand loyal with the
z250 and the kawazuki 400.

he could prob sell the z250 for enough to get an older 400ex.

there are alot of options, but modding the z250 wouldnt be
a good one in my opinion.

Yea a 300ex/250x is a good improvement over the beginner 250's especially in the woods.

But, we're talking sand here. It's not a worthwhile upgrade for a sand machine.

In the dunes your going from a snail to a slug. ;) If you've seen the size of the dunes in Oregon.. they can be dangerous on an underpowered machine.

They literally hang glide off of some of the dunes they are so tall.

The tallest ones are at least 5x taller than the tallest dune in Wynoka.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner I've been out of the net for a few days.

Thanks to all of you for the advice, I kind of knew in the back of my mind that he would get my 400 in a year or 2.

I'll be hard pressed convincing his Mom he needs a new quad after only having his for a little over a year, but I might be able to convincer her to let me trade up. I might just have to get another KFX or LTZ 400.

As for tires we are both running the same 20x11x9 IPT Sand Stars, had I know it would make that much of a difference. I would have kept his for me, which we had first and got him something else since we both have the same size wheels.

All in all sound like he’s just going to have to suck it up for awhile

Thanks again for the advice

If your son is 150 lbs or less I would DEFINITELY put him on a Blaster! It's a great bike & can be upgraded power & handling wise to get him through SEVERAL more seasons. Also, when the time comes, Blasters are easy to sell! Ray.

I got a LTZ250 and it got the job done for me for a while, but now its not as much fun to ride because I am so used to. I am also way to big for it at 5'7",120lbs, and age 15. Its just about impossible to mod it because nobody will work with it.

Racer36, you need to start looking for a used Z400. It is a GREAT quad & you won't outgrow it. Every company out there makes parts for them & they REALLY are good bikes! Ray.

How tall is he and how much experience does he have riding. Look at it in that perspective. A 300ex is always a great upgrade from the 4 storke 250 quads because its a little bigger, has more power, and more things capable of doing to it. Dont put him on a 400 unless he can easily handle the 250 and he pushes it.
