I only had 2 little runs in the clear on the back bumper which pissed me off cause I had everything else going on perfect but I got them sanded out with 2000 grit and they buffed out good.

We are going to let the owner choose if he want's it sanded and buffed because he said he wanted it done once the clear was dry but it came out so good it almost doesnt need it. I'd be more then glad to sand and buff it though because it'd bring it out X10 more!

Pretty good job. Black is the hardest standard base. It's not as hard as some mettalics, and I won't even get into tricoats. Here's my last job (on my car).

I run a Finex FX300 by Sharpe.

I bought a satajet when they first came out, We got to demo a couple for a week or so and when our rep came back we bought one for each painter. Company paid for half of the purchase. I bet I've had that gun for almost 15 years now.

I saw a hood painted like those rocks, looked like morning frost but it was paint, how do you do that? I want to spray my cbr and that may be something I could throw on there.

Have you ever shot a RP gun before? The sata can shoot at 60 psi thats crazy! These guns arnt cheap either. You can check that out at Alsacorp.com thats where those came from. Pretty cool stuff!

It's an '03 with 50K miles. I payed $6800 for it and have less than $10k in it including the 19" wheels. I bought it from a guy that deals in salvaged vehicles.

I also love my guns. IMO they are the best for the money. Remember that painting is more technique than gun. I used to use a $800 digital Sata Jet at the shop I started at. I now do my own work on the side and use the Finexs. I can spray just as good with my $100 guns as I could with the $1500 setup at that shop.

hey just a quick couple questions...

I painted my wrangler this summer with my grandfather who's a mechanic but we kind of skipped steps here and there and stuff and I got a couple of drips but I think its pretty good for my first time...

but anyway ill just say what i did and if you could correct me with what you would do or what i did wrong.

Sanded it down, to get the gloss off
Cleaned it after
Taped everything off
Primed it (how many coats should be done?)
Sanded it to smooth it
Cleaned it after
Sprayed down the red(how many coats should be done?)
Sprayed down clear coat (how many coats should be done?)
After all this I should of sanded it low grit and rubbed compound in or something for a really shiny finish right?

I figured it was a jeep and im taking it in the wood anyway so it doesnt matter, but next time I paint it which will probably be like next year I'd like to do the job 100% right.

Also what equipment should I really use? Im not looking to spend too much on the gun, not more than like 300$

I just used a regular compressor, than a regulator and this husky hvlp gun

sorry for the long post but if you could help itd be great

The only thing you have to primer are scratches, bare metal, or places you've worked with body filler. If you have any of those you have the sand that area with 220. The sand about a foot past that with 400 feathering the edges of where you sanded earlier. Then you primer the 220 spots with one coat. Wait about 5 minutes and put another coat over that, but this time bring your strokes into the 400 sanded area.

After that this is what you do:

sand the entire vehicle down with 400 (make sure everything is smooth, but don't go past the clear)

tape it up

wipe it down with some good degreaser/pre-paint cleaner

mix your paint and spray light coats over the primered areas

once it starts to cover up you can start painting the whole car

do medium wet coats over the whole car, but a panel at a time

do this until the car is one solid color with no breaks (there is no specified amount of coats)

let the base setup for around 25 minutes and mix your clear up

clean out the gun real good with lacquer thinner and wipe it out with a dry paper towel

pour in the clear and start your first coat with a very light coat, again one panel at a time

give a 10 minute flash time, just to allow the coat to get tacky.

spray a medium wet coat

flash time of around 25 minutes

medium wet coat

let it set for a day and then untape it

wetsand the car with 1500, then 2000, then 2500 (you can do just 1500 if you aren't doing a show car)

buff it out

wash it

wax it with a car show type synthetic wax

As for equipment first and foremost you need a very good drier/regulator combo. Don't skimp on this part. I spent nearly $200 for mine and I really wouldn't have gotten anything less. Also you need a good compressor. The HP and tank capacity don't matter here. It's the cfms. I can't remember what an HVLP usually uses, but it will be on the spec sheets of the gun. As for guns you will need two or three. I suggest the Finex FX300 HVLP. It's what I use and you can pick them up for less than $100. Some people use one gun for paint and one gun for clear. You don't have to, but it is ideal. Get a 1.4mm for those. For primer get the 1.8mm. I suggest this place for guns. I've always got mine there. The prices are good and they have good service.

I do things a little different. With primer you can primer the whole car to fill in rock chips and what not if you wanted. I usually sand it with 180-220-wet sand 500. Make sure to etch prime the bare metal. 4-5 coats is prob good for base, then i lay down 2 nice coats of clear. I dont think you really need to wait 25 mins to clear but whatever. 2 coats of clear will do you good. Our clear flashs in about 5 minutes super fast drying. If you want it to come out real nice you wet sand it flat, then re-clear it.

I can see primering a whole bumper cover, but the whole car is a just a waste. The sanding procedure you said is adequate. I usually don't have to do that many coats of base, but that's based on the type of base you use. I typically use PPG DBC, which covers pretty good. That is a deciding factor for base flash time before clear too. Most usually say 20 minutes atleast, but you can wait up too 24 hours. I highly recommend against waiting that long though. As for clear coats, I pretty much only doo two good ones. The first one is an old trick I've picked up. It's just a real light coat. It will tack up and will reduce the chance of runs. The fastest drying clear I've used was PPG DC3000, which I used for panel sprays, and I still waited longer than that. With a 5 minute flash time you're either using a clear that isn't designed for a full body paint or you're not waiting long enough. In the first scenario by the time you get the whole car in one coat of clear you'll have waited longer than the recommended flash time. In the other scenario you're putting it on too wet and most likely getting runs. Besides a longer flash time allows you to look over the car for any imperfections, mix another batch of clear if need be, take a breather, etc.

I'm not bashing here by any means. Just giving a little constructive criticism.

Well we dont paint whole cars, just doors hoods bumpers etc. So having a fast flash time will help out. We dont do completes, but i see what you saying. We have tried several different clears, we keep having solvent pop. Now we have RM 5600, so far no solvent pop. Have you had to deal with that before?

For clear your first coat has to look like your last coat because if you do light coats you get dry spots and you damn near have to wet sand it afterwards, if you put a thicker coat over that it would give you some nasty orange peal. You take a chance of getting run's in the clear spraying it like your last the first time, but I'd rather sand a run out then sand the entire car.

I'm not talking about spraying the first coat dry. I'm talking about spraying it light and letting it get tacky before the next coat. I learned that from one of the best bodymen I know. Most people wetsand and buff everything besides bumper covers anyway, but it's not because it has to for that reason.
