Matching tire width to rim width

I have some 18x11x8 tires on 8x8.5 rims. I need to replace the tires, and I don't know how much narrower I can go. Will 18x9.5x8 tires work on that size rim? Is there a usual rule of thumb regarding matching tire and rim width? Thanks!

The tire and rim width do not have to match, the 18x11x8 with fit and work on that rim.

Thanks, but I know the 18x11x8 tires will work on those rims, since they are already on there. My question is whether 18x9.5x8 tires will fit on those rims (8x8.5).
