I changed the oil in my 07 450er this weekend and when I was writing all the details I saw that the owners manual says to use HP4 not HP4M. The dealer told me that the HP4M was the best stuff to use. I used the HP Trans oil in the tranny side, any opinions on that? Lastly, I thought it was better to put a little extra oil in the tranny side also, is this true? How much? thanks

Honda HP 80/85W Trans Oil in the red bottle is good stuff for the Tranny.
Honda HP4 10W-40 WITHOUT Moly in the gold bottle is good stuff for the Tranny.
Rotella-T 15W-40 NON-Synthetic in the white jug is good stuff for the tranny.

And personally....I run AMSOIL MCF 10W-40 4-stroke oil in my 450R's engine side exclusively :).

i am runnin hp4m with moly, very good stuff and better than hp4 for the engine side.

as for the tranny hp tranny oil is what i use good sutff aswell..

both these oil are among the best oils u can get for the quad.... trust me.. :) hp4m and hp tranny oil

alot of the dirtbike guys put a full quart on the tranny side instead of the under a quart that is recommened.. but putting a bit more wont harm nothing.

Can you use the same engine oil in teh tranny? The manual says the same exact thing for the engine and tranny.

Do Not use HP4M in tranny, It contains Moly.
Engine=Moly OK
Trans=Moly not "OK"

I run Bel Ray Thumper in both sides, works great, never had a problem. But if your die hard honda, run the Moly in the engine side, if you put the HP4M in the tranny side, the moly pieces will adhear to the clutch plates, and the clutch with slip. Stick with regular Honda gear oil (red Honda tranny fluid its 80-85w I think)for the trasmission.

I only run GN4 for break-in. That is...the first 20 hours on a new piston. It isn't synthetic...so the rings seat much faster.

No petroleum oil will outperform a synthetic...so after break-in...I run a full synthetic in the engine side :).
