Hello! I need to rebuild my 400ex. Its smoking pretty good. I was wondering what all items/parts need to be checked when breaking it down. I have never done this before. I need to keep it as cheap as possible so I was going to get a new sleeve, and standard bore high comp. piston. Should I be worried about lower unit bearings (ie crank etc...) or can I just rebuild the top? Any help, tips, or tricks and info will be much appreciated.

you can rebuild the top and everything should be fine.

Let me worn you about high comp pistons in a 400ex...the head gaskets don't like them.

I would recomend boring and replacing rather than resleaving.

The most important thing to remember is torg your head to 32ft lbs. This is very important as the studs will pull through if you over tighten.

good luck.

your crank bearings should be fine. putting a higher compresssion piston alone will just put more stress on the rest of the engine.
