no, the copper the penny is made out of, is much softer than the gears. If you put a hardened peice of steel, you will damage the gears.

be carefull about usin a penny b/c they are not all made of copper. If you have ever drilled into a penny you would notice its more of a steel color inside. the composition has changed througout the years. Found this on wikipedia the online encyclepedia. If you use a more current penny i would find out if zinc is softer than the steel of the gears.
Years Material
1793–1836 copper
1837–1856 bronze
1857–1863 87.5% copper, 12.5% nickel (also known as NS-12)
1864–1942 bronze
1943 zinc-plated steel
1944–1961 bronze (95% copper, 5% zinc and tin)
1962–1982 95% copper, 5% zinc (about 3.04 grams)
1982– present 97.6% zinc core, 2.4% copper plating

did you try an impact gun before the penny? When I remove the nut off my clutch basket I use an electric impact gun and it comes right off.

Funny funny ha ha. Just tryin to support my info that if your using a penny b/c of its soft copper material u might wanna make sure it is truly copper.

And if it's a truly copper 1943 penny you may wanna rethink the tool of choice;)

The most paid for a 1943 copper penny was $82,500. That's alot of pennies

i'm with Kc, put an impact on it, and it'll come off with the machine in neutral without holding the basket in any way.
