Newbie to the Forum!

This may sound like an idiotic qeustion, but i recently bought what I thought to be a 2000 400ex, after getting the 4-wheeler home and riding some I noticed the valves ticking a little and decided to change oil and adjust them, upon further inspection I found out the motor is built, bored and has HOT CAMS in it. I seen the valve adjustment for stock lift cams is .005 on the exhuast and .004 on the intake. My qeustion is will the clearance be the same for the bigger cams????? Any or all input would be great, and maybe a way to tell the stage of cams I have.

Thanks alot - Adam

Welcome,
No, the clearance is NOT the same. I'm sure some one can tell you the exact numbers. Also hotcams can tick when correctly adjusted. I think this is just because there is more lash, so the rockers are loose.

Intake - .005
Exhaust - .006

For the hotcams valve specs.

How do you know it was bored out and had the cam swapped for a hotcams? Do a little tear down?

yea, after removing the valve adjustment covers i was rotating the engine and watching the valves, and read on the cam they was hotcams. then contacted the guy who built the engine and he told me about it, bored to a 426, 13:1 compression, stage III hotcams, thus explained why it ran like **** on 93 pump gas. any good ideas on where to get gas?????

You for sure need to run 110 atleast with 13:1 compression. To find some high octane just ask at bike shops or goto a dirt track race and ask around there. There has to be a high octane pump somewhere.

Is the valve cover on the left side by the gear lever?

The valve covers are on the cylinder head cover, on the top of the engine.

Honestly, if you aren't sure where the valves are you may not want to try to adjust them. If done wrong, your engine may no longer run. Just trying to help. :D

No, alot of things can. Over-revving. Usual wear and tear. That's why it is recommended you get them checked every so often

im saying are if the hotcams are the only aftermarket part that effect the clearence that there should be when adjusting.
