slack adjuster? do you mean the rear axle bearing carrier? if so you can pick up a new one with bearings for about $150. to take it off is fairly easy:
-take off the brake caliper
-take off the chain
-take off the tires and brake side wheel hub.
-loosen the two large nuts next to the brake hub( they are left hand thread)
-there is a c-clip on the axle, remove that.
-slide the nuts and threaded tube off the axle.
-the axle should slide out of the carrier.
-loosen the 4 bolts on the back of the swingarm
- remove the large C-clip on the end of the carrier itself.
-the carrier should slide out of the swingarm.

do the opposite to re-install. should only take about an hour if you have done it before. first time may take longer though.
