Yeah most people mount it on the right side ahead of the gas tank a little bit. but honestly I wouldn't ruin your brand new plastics. What I would to is put a toggle switch somewhere underneath the plastics but is easy for you to reach. Another reason for doing this is so that nobody could steal it because they do not know where the switch is. But if you do not want to go through that trouble and just want to take the key out everytime you park it then just mount it in the plastic right ahead of the gas tank on either the right or left side.

I don't have a pic and didn't make it, but I have an aluminum bracket that mounts to one of the bolts under the top of the stem. As you know there are four bolts that hold the bars to the stem. The bracket plate just goes under one of the nuts on the front side of the steering stem. The bracket has a hole in it that the key mechanism fits tightly in. Its a little tough to explain. If I can get a pic this weekend I will post it.

HERES MINE
1" hole with a little weatherstriping glue to secure it, looks like crap but serves the purpose very well

NEUTRAL LIGHT ON OPPOSITE DIDE
this will snap in place and secure itself

Here this might help you. Made it from a scrap piece of aluminum. Works good too!
