here we have one county where its just flat out illegal to have them in the county......I live on the border between the two counties and thought I was getting over. I was later told that if that dog is IN the county (I was taking him to obedience classes there) he will be confiscated and destroyed...NO WARNINGS!! Needless to say we never went back. Whats worse is that if youre on vacation and driving say from Florida to NY or something and you pass through that county the same rules apply, talk about the worst vaction ever.:(

i got lucky, im a firefighter in the rome area, and there was a fire at the shelter, and i was bringing in some food, and fell in love with the lil floow, needless to say, 3 wks later, hes become my best friend, and eats about 25 lbs of food a week. luckily along with the pup came his akc papers. im not going touse them though, dogs shoudlnt have to be tortured thorough all that stuff, me and him like to lye around the house and watch eukeneba, and when its work time, he likes to come hang out..... hes already 20 lbs... with 6in paws

you gotta understand there more than one breed of pit bull. American pit bull terrier and one they just classify as pit bull terrier. The american generally is built more like the american bulldog tall, big head broad chest. The razr edge puppies are classified as "pit bull terriers", short stature and stocky. My dog stands about 30" at the shoulder.

your breeder should be beat for breeding his dogs to look like that not only are the gonna have hip and shoulder probs down the line there so far from the akc standards

yeah youre right about that BUT a pit bull is not recognized by the AKC.....pit bulls are mutts know matter how you look at it. The breed has been bred with some many other breeds to get size/ color etc...another reason the temperment of the dog is not guaranteed. The akc only recognizes staffies from the "pit bull family"

you really are one ignorant person you've been told that before right?
American Pitbull Terriers are a more beefed up breed up staffordshire terriers, btw its not american stafforshier terries, its just stafforshires, my mom runs and animal adoption agency buddy, so don't bother claiming your write cause I know I am.
Stafforshiers are the smaller breed of pitbulls, they're perfectly healthy weight is 55-60 pounds, our Stafforshire terrier petey weighs 62 pounds
You must not have studied the breed of pitbulls too hard.

well then i guess you and your mom is wrong my firend my fam used to breed these dogs so i know a thing or two. american staffordshire terriers are the same thing as a pit bull with a better name its the same dog ok the reason is so when you tell people you have a pit bull they automatically think its gonna kill them thats when the am staff name came in and most apbts only get about 70 lbs unless you have a champion bloodline and the right vitemens to beef them up like mine
o and fyi theres such thing as a american staffordshre terrier

You can keep thinking your right...I dont care if you live your life in ignorance, and btw, vitamins dont make pits that big, steriods and treadmills do, so do you fight your dogs? cause if you do you should be shot.

The American Staffordshire is a very muscular, stocky, yet agile dog, and is extremely strong for his size. He has a broad, powerful head, short muzzle, and very strong jaws. The ears are generally cropped, though this is optional. The eyes are round and black. The teeth should form a scissors bite. Its coat is made up of thick, short, shiny hair. All colors are admissible, but dogs must not be more than 80% white. The tail tapers to a point. The ears are erect and docked slightly. Classed by AKC as "American Staffordshire Terrier" and by UKC as "American Pit Bull Terrier." The American Staffordshire Terrier, are generally of larger bone structure, head size and weight then their cousins the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Temperament
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog. Gentle and loving towards people. Good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet. It is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, this dog wants nothing more then to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of life. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced this friendly, trustworthy, dog who is an especially good dog for children. Courageous and a persistent fighter if provoked. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death if the enemy traps the dog in a corner and threatens its loved ones. This breed has a very high tolerance for pain. Some un-socialized Staffs may be dog aggressive. Socialize very thoroughly when young to curve any dog aggressive tendencies. This breed can be difficult to housebreak. It has given outstanding results as a guardian of property, but is at the same time esteemed as a companion dog. When properly trained and socialized, the Staff makes a great family companion. This breed is not for the passive owner who does not understand that all dogs have an instinct to have a pack order. Read Top Dog
Height, Weight
Height: Dogs 17-19 inches (43-48cm) *****es 16-18 inches (41-46cm)
Weight: 57-67 pounds (25-30 kg)
Health Problems
A generally healthy breed. Some are prone to hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and congenital heart disease.
Living Conditions
Staffordshire Terriers will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is very active indoors and will do alright without a yard. This breed prefers warm climates.
Exercise
American Staffordshire Terriers must have plenty of regular exercise, but keep them leashed in public to avoid fights with other dogs.
Life Expectancy
About 9-15 years
Litter Size
Average of 5 - 10 Puppies
Grooming
The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush, and bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. A rub with a piece of toweling or chamois will make the coat gleam. This breed is an average shedder.
Origin
In the nineteenth century in the English region of Staffordshire, crossing among the Bulldog and various terriers developed the muscular, active, combative Staffordshire Bullterrier. Brought to the United States, the breed was preferred by American breeders who increased its weight and gave it a more powerful head. Now recognized as a separate breed, the American Staffordshire is larger and heavier than his British cousin, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. After dog fighting was banned in the United States in 1900, two strains of these dogs were developed, a show strain and a fighting dog strain. The show strain was labeled the American Staffordshire, while the fighting dog strain was labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier. The two are now being recognized as separate breeds. Today the American Pit Bull Terrier is being bred with the same gentle qualities as the American Staffordshire Terrier. They both make great pets with the right kind of owner. Some of the American Staffordshire Terriers talents are watchdog, guarding, police work, weight pulling and agility.

The difference between Pits and American Staffordshire Terriers is a difficult one. Even breeders can't agree. The main difference is the bloodline.

haha ya i didnt plan on it
Most pit owners never intend for their dog to snap and attack kids but all too often they do just that. Someone commented on here that all dogs can kill, yea that may be partially true, all I know whenever you hear about a dog attacking someone, it's never a lab or a beagle!!!!!!!:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

There has never been a documented case of any dog just "snapping". Dogs dont snap. They are either bred wrong, abused, or all the above. Some dogs just arent wired right from birth. It just amazes me of the things people believe.
What would make better headlines, pitbull, beagle, pomaranian, weiner dog attack?
People need to educate themselves before believing this load of crap.

I just get tired of everyone labeling dogs. How dogs just suddenly go bizerk. They forget too mention that the dog was always tied outside, never socialized, the owner was afraid of it, had piss poor breeding. blah blah blah..

Not to label pit bulls , but there has been reported cases of Pits snapping out of the blue . It is known that the pit bull has a higher risk of chemical imbalance which has led them to snap out of the blue .
There has also been many cases of pitbulls and groups of pitbulls tearing apart little kids because they think the kid is a toy . Also the victim has less of a chance to escape because of the way the pitbull's jaw locks. The same goes for Rottweilers .
The way the dog is raised , treated , socialized , breed , etc all makes a difference in how the dog will act , but some things about certain breeds can't be broken .
Check the link .. scroll all the way to the bottom and look at the stats dating back to the '70s relating to dog attacks . Looks at the most common breed .
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwR/preview/mmwrhtml/00047723.htm
A quote from a different site .
http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html#Thedogsmostlikelytobite
"The breeds most likely to kill
In recent years, the dogs responsible for the bulk of the homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers:
"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)
The Clifton study of attacks from 1982 through 2006 produced similar results. According to Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes were responsible for 65% of the canine homicides that occurred during a period of 24 years in the USA. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.)
Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas. (Dog Bite Related Fatalities," Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, May 30, 1997, Vol. 46, No. 21, pp. 463 et. seq.) Since 1975, fatal attacks have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds.
The most horrifying example of the lack of breed predictability is the October 2000 death of a 6-week-old baby, which was killed by her family's Pomeranian dog. The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed. Note, however, that they were bred to be watchdogs! The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was ****ing the baby, who died shortly afterwards. ("Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, October 9, 2000, Home Edition, Metro Section, Page B-5.)
In Canine homicides and the dog bite epidemic: do not confuse them, it has been pointed out that the dog bite epidemic as a whole involves all dogs and all dog owners, not just the breeds most likely to kill.
In all fairness, therefore, it must be noted that:
Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner or handler most often is responsible for making a dog into something dangerous.
An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant (see above).
Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be potentially dangerous. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack.
To learn more about dog attacks, see Why dogs bite people To learn about how to take some of the bite out of the dog bite epidemic, see Attorney Kenneth Phillips' 10-point plan for Preventing Dog Bites."

Any dog will snap , especially if it's raised improperly , but Pits are among the top 3 that have the most attacks on people .. right along side German Sheppards and Rottweilers .
Pits are a fighting dog . The breed was developped for blood sports ... bull-baiting , bear-baiting , fighting other dogs . No matter how hard you try to break the dog , a pitbull has it in it's genes that it's purpose is to fight ... it's natural instincts for the breed ... just like Labs are known as water dogs , retrieving dogs ... Huskys are pulling dogs and so on . The purpose of the dog comes natural to them because of years and years of molding the dogs .
Now no denying that your dog is a nice looking dog and I hope the best that he never attacks anyone for any reason , same goes for any other breed of dog ... BUT you can't argue research and statistcs . :ermm:
