alright so im by a quad pretty soon here an i cant decide if i want a 400ex or a 450r . So i want to kno what the absolute difference is.

MXracer16
01-03-2007, 05:49 PM
Everything. The 400 is a more of a trail bike. The 450 is a race machine. If its your first quad, get a 400.

J//FLY
01-03-2007, 05:51 PM
yeah it is my first quad of my own

What kind of riding are you doing?

J//FLY
01-03-2007, 05:55 PM
me an my buddy i ride with pretty much do all kinds of riden. mostly messen around on his table top. but i really want somethin good to go to the sand dunes with this summer

01-03-2007, 06:05 PM
Save money and buy the 450. If you buy the 400 its gonna get boring in a week.

01-03-2007, 06:09 PM
the difference between the 450r and 400ex is comparable to the difference of the 400ex and 250ex

hartnett18
01-03-2007, 06:20 PM
If i where you i would just wait for the 450r because in the long run you will wish you had gotten the r if you got the 400 after awhile. plus the 450r will rip in the sand so if your looking for somthing to have fun at the dunes with i would get that over a 400ex.

Yeh, I rode 400ex's and 450r's and the power is totally different, but at the Ft races last year there were 400exs getting like 2nd in a field with like 10-12 450r's!

There were 3 400ex's there and they were killing all the 450's, I was like HOLY *****! And this was Flatrack which is more of a speed race than MX which is more, who knows how to jump/the lines/how to read terrain. So that surprised the hell out of me.

But hey.

If you want somethin to RIP, and especially in sand, I'll always say the 250r! But be ready cuz the front end decides when IT wants to come up, not you. Haha.

I don't like the power of a 450r, first gear is tall, the rest are quick, it makes me feel funny.

Save money and buy the 450. If you buy the 400 its gonna get boring in a week.

Odd you say that, I've had my 400 since last january, I wouldn't sell it for anything...except another 400ex built to my specific needs. I love my 400. :macho

what year 450r did you ride? the newer ones are better. I know my 04 is wicked tall in 1st. But as long as im not trail riding, which I never do. I dont mind it at all.

Dude, If you can afford a 450...get it, but you'll be happy with the 400ex, trust me. You can find AWESOME deals on 400ex's online.

It was a 2006, i rode a 2005 before, it felt way underpowered compared to the 2006.

Re-gearing helps this problem. I say skip the 400 and go right to the 450

What about a full blown 440ex with all high end performance equipment....pipe, filter, jets, all possible motor work ect.. How would that compare to a stock 450?

CHEVYZ
01-04-2007, 04:59 AM
It would beat a stock 450r and run close with HRC equipped 06s.

01-04-2007, 05:20 AM
Get the right tool for the job.

If you're gonna MOSTLY be riding wide open dunes, I'd go with the 450R.

If you are gonna ride trails, track, dunes, etc, I'd prolly go with the 400EX.

And the fact its your first quad, the EX is a rock solid, reliable, bullet proof quad.

garandman pretty much nailed it on the head...i love my 450r, but i have it for sale to go back to my 400ex...the 450r loves throttle and makes obsticles on trails almost impossible...larger logs that can't be hit at speed are a pain to try to get over, espcially when there might be slower riders in front of you(i know ourtrails with the fastest bike so i always bring up the rear)....

i feel like i am faster on the 400ex on the trails than i am on the 450r...the r sits higher than my 400ex, and feels a little more tippy to me...

roundsy
01-04-2007, 08:13 AM
i've owned both, and i know a lot of ppl have said the 400ex is a lot better in the trails, it is for the most part, but you can get the r close if you gear it right. if you decide to buy the r, make sure you grab a one or 2 tooth smaller sprocket, unless its an 06/07 then you will likely be fine. After owning both, i think my 450r feels like a v8 and the ex was a v6..imo

01-04-2007, 08:26 AM
i think im pretty sold on the 400ex. i mean it will still sweet its not like im guna be board.

A friend and I got our quads at around the same time. I got the 400 he got the 450... we went trail riding one day and got stuck at a dead end. I reversed out, he had to get off and push. And not having big manly man muscles and spongy suspension makes pushing a quad not that great of an experience....

And plus theres no threat of me taking my atv to a track or dunes with me living in bama... so i think i made a wise choice. He takes his to a track and still gets walked so i'd rather get walked having reverse.

But on retrospec if the 400's didnt have reverse i would have just went ahead with a 450. No way in hell i would have gone back to a 300ex.

01-04-2007, 11:58 AM
i learned to live without reverse in about two seconds. buying a quad for reverse really shows that you are probably over 30 years old. am i right?

I ain't got no stinkin' reverse.

Reverse is fer wimmenz and chiddrenz.

Actually, if you know what you are doing, the terrain becomes your reverse.

When I was riding down in Tennessee my whole riding group came to a dead end, we were all riding in a shallow creek that was about 5 feet wide and had muddy banks that were about 4 feet high. Everyone got off their quad and started pushing them back...while they were doing that I turned into the bank and rolled back down it and I was turned around and didnt even have to get off my quad...that was kinda funny to me :p

i dont need reverse, good part about the 450's and even my old 416 is you just hit the gas and lean, you would be suprised how tight of areas you can turn around like this, i dont miss reverse coming off reverse equiped atv's

Yeh, reverse, Psh! I don't need that.

When I was lookin for my 250r everyones, like, don't get that, its old, its a 2-stroke and it doesn't have reverse

I'm like

1. Yeh its old but mine is like brand new, in great shape, and its a legend and imo the best quad ever built.

2. THAT WHY I WANT IT CUZ ITS 2-STROKE

3. Reverse is for people who don't know how to RIDE!

Yeh, everyone who said that to me, I blow their @sses away!!! 400ex's, Raptors, 450r's with a couple mods on it.

Yeh, they don't say anything any more. Ha

But reverse to me is, 180 slide/roll up a hill and back down/walk it backwards with your feet on the front tires.

Piece a cake, LoL.

haha...neither of u spelled it right.....lol...u mean garage.

reverse helps with that for me, cuz we got a driveway with walls on both sides, and a car in the middle....so it is easier to back it up through there, than start at the end of the driveway and push it all the way back and around the car...but u still don't really need it unless u get wrapped up in the trees every so often

I love how people say reverse is for women... I mean I know I have become quite feminine and fatter since I got my 05, and its so much slower than the 99-04's:rolleyes:

oldskoolex400
01-06-2007, 10:16 PM
well actually if you want to get specific the 99-04 is faster than the 05 and up, put a pipe on both jet both and filter both, the 04 will win due to a 15 t front sprocket on a longer drag, not trying to be an *** but just pointing that out

troutman561
01-06-2007, 10:33 PM
Ok well of course different gearing is going to have different results top end.... If both are geared the same way they are basicly the same, the few extra pounds the new style has make almost no difference....

01-06-2007, 10:44 PM
there is also differnet internal gearing in the 05 and newer one's that make it slower, along with a smaller carb and a few other minor things, i think

oldskoolex400
01-06-2007, 10:58 PM
yea they slowed them down to make them less competative to a 450, the carb changes they made suck too, IMO the old is better, but if you HAVE to have reverse the new is the way to go

oldskoolex400
01-06-2007, 10:59 PM

Negative.

Sure gearing is important on everything, but this track you hit top end, the 450's are hittin 5th wfo, not me cuz I got a 250r and 6 gears, and run mine high rpms in a lower gear, anyway, this track and even any track.

This track you go from low 2nd to top of 5th, so you need gearing everywhere so I disagree.
