Hi guys. I picked up a 97 from my brother-in-law. Dropped an exhaust valve that did a number on the piston, head and other exhaust valve. I'm not sure if the head is to bad to be saved or not. I was just thinking about getting a stock used head from ebay and boring the cylinder with a 11:1 piston, dropping in a cam and calling it good. After reading and searching for a bit it seems porting and polishing will help the 300ex breathe. I have access to a 400ex carb. So instead of spending $200 on a stock head, should I have mine fixed and built up? Where are some good places that do this kind of work? Should I still go with the Hi compression piston? I don't want to mess with the bottom end so stroking or machine work on the cases are out of the question. This bike is going to be a play bike and mostly for the wife, but if I have to replace the piston and head I might as well do it right!! haha Give me your opinions!

Nobody can give you an accurate answer without seeing the head for ourselves

without seeing pics of the damage i'm gonna vote with no, do not save the old head.

Off subject but, Brahmus, where's Delcambre at? Where do you ride at?

Work PC is not working with the pics so I'll upload them tonight.

Delcambre is south of Lafayette about 40 minutes or so. I just moved back here from Houston where I've been for 2 years. I have friends that ride at LA dunes, Scilly Island, Forest hills etc. I haven't made a trip in years but use to ride at Hurricane alley/Down south years ago.

Ok here are some pics. I'm guessing the P&P guys don't normally do anything inside the dome but this one would need some TLC. Possible build up? Let me know what you think.

Yeah, from what I can see I would vote for a new head. You can some times get a P&P head off eBay, just be careful and know what you are buying. For a good stock head I would recommend GDH Racing off eBay, they sell only 250X/300EX things. There are also 11:1 Wiseco pistons on eBay, gaskets too. Also cams if you get lucky. ;)

Also you need to try to find out why the valve dropped. Was it bad timing(only one valves says no), a bad pair of keepers, inadequate spring, or just high RPM? maybe just a flute, or a Burr somewhere.

lol doesnt quite look as bad as one of them i had, i would say a new head would be in order you would really have too work on that head to make it work again, it can be done but for less time and more than likely money a new head would be the way to go, you can find one for around 100 or so on ebay i suspect. If your piston was anything like mine then you have a mess on your hands on the bottom end.

Piston wasn't to bad and neither is the sleeve. Damaged yes but not all that bad, I've seen worst. What is the likely hood of buying a "new" head (used even) already ported from a vendor or shop? If I have to replace it, I may as well do it right.

Yeah, you can find a ported head off eBay. I did. Just know what you are buying, of coarse. ;)
