timing help please

I have a 2001 400EX and i rebuilt it and when i ran it the exhaust is being blown back through the intake just ever so slightly. Just enough to make it run crappy. Do i need to advance or or back it off. And if so either way which way do i turn the cam gear clockwise or counter clockwise. I think it is only off a tooth.

sounds like you need to retard the timing..

you need to take a look at the timing and make sure it's lined up properly.. also double check your valve adjustments after you put it back together..
