I can use a 87-89 on a 86 frame as long as i remove the center motor mount for the 86 swinger right? Then it will shorten me -1 Inches also right?

86/87 swingarms are the same, 88/89 swingarms are the same and are solid across the front, no motor mount bracket.

I run an 88 swingarm on my 87 frame but I added the lower motor mount to my frame before powdercoating it. I think you will want at least one mount in the rear and the lower is easy to fab up.

you can do it, but the 86 frame doesn't have rear motor mount tabs like teh 88-89 does so you wouldn't have any rear motor mounts unless you make some.

I think I'd be fine without right? How hard is to weld something up?

you need that motor mount, alot of people add the tabs to the bottom to use the bottom motor mount bolt, its not hard to do.

Check this thread (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=191285&perpage=15&highlight=frame&pagenumber=1) and you'll see where the mounts need to be added.

Make sure you have the rest of the mounts connected to the motor before you tack weld the new lower rear mounts to the frame.

can't you just cut out that middle section of the swingarm and then just put the motor mount in the middle just like on the 86 swingarm?

I have a friend thats going to cut the middle tube on the front of the swingarm so the engine mount can fit...can this be done or should I just weld on some motor mounts to the frame? I really don't want to touch the frame since it's already powdercoated. thx

You cant cut that out of the swingarm. You could maybe cut it out and move it back so you will still have the strength that it provides and still use it. I would go with the frame tabs.

why can't I cut it? I don't have the swingarm with me to measure...will the engine mount fit inside of the swingarm with the middle section cut out?

if you cut that out, it might affect the structural intergrity of that arm. i would be very catious.

ok, the guy who has the swingarm is a welder/welding inspector so I'm pretty confident in his work. He's selling it to me pretty cheap, so if it doesn't hold up im not losing too much on the deal. He said it was an 86 swingarm to begin with so i'm sure cutting that tube can't affect it that much.

that was not a 86/87 swing arm, the 86-87 swing arm only had 2 pinch bolts, not 4. the 88-89 had 4.

86/87 were steel also, the newer ones were aluminum.
