Hey Everyone! I have my motor all tore apart in the garage, and i was wondering if i should do a 426 kit or a 440 kit. I ride all dunes. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what i need for the 426 kit. I am also going to purchase a Hotcams Stage 2 cam, good or bad decison? Your input is highly appreciated!

my opinion is do the 426 first. this way if something ever goes wrong you can go up to the 440. i plan on doing the 416 first, then working my way up. just remember, its easier to go up than down. come to think of it i wonder if you had a 440, could you sleeve it to a 426 or such. but then again why would you want to. nevermind on that last comment, i didnt think it though before i wrote it. actually i didnt want to erase it, so ill just add two more sentences to make it longer.

go 440. if you screwed it up you'd have to resleave it anyway

That is a tough question. I have a 440 in mine and I thought it worked well in the dunes, even though I have only had it there a couple of times. I guess it would be personal preffernce. You can do a 426 now and resleeve it later to a 440. Or just do it all at once and get it over with. I would think you would want as much as you can get for the dunes. :devil Unless you do a 426 with a high compression piston.
Sorry I can't be much more help. :(

Doesnt the 440 kit get to hot and need to run on race fuel? Thats my main concern on doing a 426 rather than a 440, and who makes a good 426 kit?

A 440 may run warmer but compression has to do with race fuel. If you stay under 11:1 with either bore you can run pump gas.

i talked to a local track owner and his son used to race a nicly decked out 400 ex, before the 440 they were running 416, and he said that the 416 was a better engine becuse it reved a lot faster, more troque in mid and top, reliablie as ****, then they got the 440 kit installed and they were blowing head gaskets, rings, pistons, it wasn't reliable any more so they sold it, they say to stick with the 416 and you will have as good as a machine as the 440 but it will last.

also get some hard faced rockers, titainum springs, and a spark heavy duty timing chain so the stocker don't snap.

I also am planinng to do a 426 kit one day, but i am thinknig about going with a TC or Sparks race cam.
I'd go with 426 insted of 440.

I have a 425 kit in our 400ex and love it, we only ride in the dunes and it does really well. I did go with an 11:1 piston so I do run race gas but I think you'd still be happy if you choose to go with a 10:1 compression. Speed and power wise, I have no problem running with or for that matter beating most 440's, at the dunes anyway. I think the smaller sized higher revving motors work better in that environment.

I say whatever you want just save your money and do it all right the first time so that you don't have to keep reboring it bigger, getting bigger pistons, and all that other stuff that way you never have to touch the motor again and may end up being cheaper and more powerful in the long run.

Get a JE 10.8:1 425/426 Piston, TC Cam, TC Valve Springs, and TC Oversized Head Studs and your Motor would be Bulletproof. That`s what I want to build this Winter.
