My pipes got bright red..

Alright, so. We went on our christmas vacation and hauled my 400ex 750 miles to texas because i got family that lives near a beach annnddd of course..dunes! So i rode there alot, tonight we went on the long drive home and on the way i decided i wanted to take it o a pressure washer. So i do, i clean her up really good and finally got to the point where i needed to start it and load it up in the truck. So i did, my ex is extremly cold natured (needing to rejet) so it takes a bit to get it started most of the time in the cold i gotta let it idle for a few minutes. I had it running fairly good then i put it to 2/4 throttle for about 10 seconds tops id guess and the pipes got real bright red so i let off and they kinda went back to the right color still a little red. Is this normal for an ex? I've owned atv's all my life not once have i had this happen i dont think it was hurting anything but i just never seen my pipes get so hot like that.

I noticed that too with mine.I think it might be normal, I know that some yfz's do this and its normal so im guessing its normal.

my header glows slight red in the dark.

its probably normal

mine does, and my buddies 400's do it too. i've seen R's that glow red as well

a red glow is an indication of running lean

I think he was trying to say 1/2 throttle.

2/4=1/2

What mods do you have? Is your main jet still a stock 148K. It sounds like you're lean. You may have to go with a bigger pilot and main jet. A slight red glow is understandable but, bright red is a bit excessive.

I agree....if its hard to start when cold and the pipes are glowing, you're lean on the low/mid side. Increase the pilot one size and ride it. You may have to richen your idle mixture a tad as well. Better yet, if ya low speed is lean...chances are everything is lean. You may want to check the plug....look for a very light tan or white color. Anything less than a good brown color would signify a lean condition somewhere, if not everywhere.
