It's the factory headlight guard from the 350x or 250r trikes. You should be able to find them on ebay.

The headlight guard on that bike is a hondaline part that is discontinued. That part was available for the '87-'88 TRX250X. I have found a few on ebay. I have them on a couple of bikes. see pics.

The one that looks high, looks that way because it was not installed when picture was taken, just sitting there. It is installed in other picture. The bumper is a factory '87-'88 TRX250X bumper with the Hondaline bumper extension installed. I found it on ebay, just like the light guard.

The headlight guard bolt on using the two bolt that hold the headlight in the housing, but need to be longer, then the factory ones. And there is a band clamp that goes around the handlebars that holda the back. The bumper is a bolt on as well it uses the top two bumper bolt and the two bolts for the '87-'88 TRX250X style skidplate. The '91-'92 skidplate bolt in the front not on the sides. I let you know if I want to sell them or not, I like them pretty though, I will keep a eye out for other and let you know if I run across any.

You're right. Not sure what I was thinking...but the 250r's did have a metal guard around the headlight that could probably be made to fit.

I don't think it would be too hard to do at all. The 300ex and 250r headlights are almost exactly the same and they bolt up the same way. I'm not 100% sure the bolts will line up perfectly though since I haven't tried it.
