I am 15 and about to purchase a new quad for racing MX. I am either going to buy a new LT-R450 or a MX built 400ex, which do you think would be a better quad to get?

id say the 400Ex just because its fast and reliable, not sayin the ltr isnt but it hasnt been around long enough to no any long term defects.... just my opinion

that quad is no good for racing anymore, hands down the ltr, there super competitive and faster than a 400ex will ever be without blowing thousands for motor mods that will make it less reliable than any 450

I bet everyone of you could get beat by a fast person on a 400ex no matter what you are on. If your fast your fast, if your slow your slow. Quads and parts make a difference but the majority of it comes down to the rider.

Hes 15. He would learn alot on the ex and can later move on.

I have a friend who races some d34 races around here and smoked several people on yfz's and 450r's. He had a bad start and still made it to 4th out of about 15-18 riders.

If i was 15 i wouldnt want a bike with a motor that i would have to rebuild after 1 season.

.

Sounds like this guy is new to racing.

As such, the BEST thing he can do for himself is get some SERIOUS suspension.

Now the LTR is a faster bike no doubt , and the factory LTR suspension is pretty good, but NOT as good as some serious aftermarket suspension tuned to his ride weight and style.

The 400EX has all the speed a new racer needs, and with serious suspension, he'd be better off on the EX, if he's going up against racers of equal skill on the off the showroom floor LTR. The better suspension will make him better in the whoops, turns and rough stuff - where races are won and lost.

With the lesser motor of the EX he'll have to endurance train and practice more than the guys with the LTR's expecting their bikes to win races for them, then when he moves up to a 450, he'll smoke the guys who never did train and practice like he did. Its called the Ricky Carmichael method.

Cuz afer all - its the rider, NOT the ride.
