which one would be the best choice for a first truck as far as being able to haul a quad and be pretty good with gas?

i drive a 1993 s10 with a 2.8 v6 and 5 speed manual. one of my friends has a 2004 ford ranger with a 4.0 v6 automatic. his truck is a lot nicer with tons more power options and a back seat. but insurance is also higher along with his gas bill. my other friend has a ZR2 s10 which is an s10 with big tires and a lift and a 4.3 v6. its really just like the ranger except a little worse on gas.

really depends on the year you get and what kind of options and features it has. our 450 fits fine in both our trucks. driving an hour on the highway i use a little more than 1/8 a tank of gas with my quad in the back. normal city driving my tank lasts about 2 weeks. just depends on your budget really. i payed 3 grand for my truck and its decent but isnt a show piece.

It just depends on what you like better you cant really go wrong with either one. Im a ford man so I would go with the ranger but s10's are good little trucks to. If you get a ranger make sure its a 86 and up with the fuel injected V6 either 2.9, 3.0, or 4.0. 1990 and up ranger's have a 8.8 instead of a 7.5 rear end and a dana 35 instead of a dana 28 front end. Automatic's are dogs also I would recommend a 5 speed with manual hubs and transfer case. The older ranger's with the 2.9's get great gas mileage but the 4.0's are almost as bad as a V8. Any ranger will fit a quad in the bed as long as its not a stepside.

Depends on what kinda truck my 4.0 v6 ranger only gets 17 MPG where a 4cyl S10 will get over 20.

I think a S-10 bed is bigger then a ranger. Not sure though.

im a ford guy but i have to say a s 10. ive had two and my dad has a 02 right now. awsome gas mileage and just enough room in the bed for a quad. plus there is a whole lot more aftermaket stuff for a s10 if ur wanting to do anything to it.

My first truck, this was 02 or 01

i've drivien bot the ranger 4L and now own a 4.3L sonoma.......2 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive the sonoma is quite a bit better on gas, 4X4 there we damn near the same, i bought the GMC cause i like the ride better, and like the looks alot better, and in 2WD models the s10/sonoma has more pull. now the ranger i had was a standard and the sonoma is Auto, but the sonoma had way more noticable pull

I`ve had both, 1 s-10 and 3 rangers. Both brands were decent trucks but the build quality goes to the ranger, I still have 1 ranger, 98 model with 148k miles still running good. But if i had to do it all over again, a toyota tacoma xtended cab v6 manual. Power, room, reliability and good resale value. Plus with the manual decent gas mileage. :)

i have had 2 rangers now. a 96 std cab w/ 2.3 4cyl and 5 spd. The motor was a dog if u ask me. If you are looking for a 4cyl i would go w/ the s10 2.2

I now have a 99 ranger w/ 3.0 and an auto. It gets good gas milage but i wish it was a stick because the auto seems to rob the power out of the 3L.

I would def get an extended cab and 6cyl tho. When i had the 2.3 it would kill it when i had my quad in the back.

I have a 2002 Ranger 4.0 V6 4x4 Supercab. I really like it. Both the 400ex or the 250ex fit in the box w/ the tailgate up which is nice. It has the tow package which is nice since it has the tranny cooler and heavier springs. I have a 6x12 fully enclosed and it doesn't make my truck look like it wants to pull a wheelie from the weight. It pulls it fine at 62-64 mph. Any faster than that and it sucks gas like crazy. Driving to my parents house 200 miles away at 60-65 I can make it in one tank. If I try to do 70-75 all the way I end up filling the tank 2 to 3 times. Its crazy the difference speed makes on gas consumption.

i would choose a s10 ive have 2 of them one was over 200k but still ran good but body was getting rough for being a 89 then i got a 94 s10 both had the 4.3 vortecs awsome engine the 94 had well over 240k and still ran strong and traded it in for teh 89 silverado 1500 i have right now they gave me 3200 for the trade and i only bought it for 1800 quite the deal so overall i would say the s10 would last the longest imo dont see to many older fords around here
