I have a K&N filter on my 06 Outlaw and was having some troubles starting. Took it to dealer and found that intake valves were chewed up. After talking to warranty folks they say that there are quite a few problems with the K&Ns. Has anyone else had the same problem? If so what filter would anyone suggest. I am also looking at the White Bros filter.

The air filter has nothing to due with the Valves unless the K&N has holes in it and is passing dirt it may eat some valves and your piston too. how many hours on your engine?, where where the valves damage?, was the timing off? more info will help

They said that the timing was fine, piston looks fine, the valves were damaged around the seats. The warranty guy said that the K&Ns are letting too much dirt in. Where we ride it is usually very dusty or muddy.

I have heard that about the K&N's. That is why they are usually recommended for desert and maybe MX, not trails. I heard that the K&N flows so well because it is not the greatest at filtering the fine debris (dust) compared to the dual layered foam filters. I don't know if that is the problem you are seeing, but I would expect them to prove that it was the filter causing it, not just "claim" that it is. If they can prove that it is the filter, you could probably go after K&N at that point!

My friends and I have been running K&N filters for years in dusty conditions. I ride in the Pennsylvania coal regions and thats some of the nastiest dust around. We all run an Outerwear on our filters and clean our filter after every ride, and we've never had a problem
