about a week ago, my monitor started shutting off and then would come back on. It wasnt turning off, just going black.

so saturday night, i see an update trying to load and it was dragging my internet down bad so i killed it(now i have been informed that wasnt the smart thing to do)

anyway, i chatted with harlen and he said i should allow the update to run, which i did. it took almost 3 days!

so tonight, its all updated but now its doing another update:confused:

anyway, i have run norton, nothing found. ive lost some functions, some programs are only working after reinstallation, not many online sites that i use for shipping etc are recognizing me but i think i got that figured out.

sorry for the rant, as i am not a computer geek(ahem....computer wiz as harlen calls it) i sure could use some tips or suggestions.

thanks in advance, and if you see anyone wondering why i havent replied in my usual timely fashion, please tell them the hick is having pc issues:p

Take it to a computer place.

initially, it sounds like it could have been something with the display properties, ie. the refresh rate possibly.

After updating, good luck! I know that''s not what you want to hear, but the last PC I did all the updates on drove me nuts! Service pack 2 is a pain, IE 7 is a pain, auto update is a pain........

I have better luck with an outdated OS I guess :ermm:

Our old Compaq started doing that and one time I was trying to put a last second bid on something on Ebay and the screen just went blank.I threw the computer out in the driveway and ran over it with my truck.
I know that probably wasn't much help to you :ermm:

Mine is doing the same thing. It will just turn black and you cant get it to come back on. It will take several minutes until the monitor decides it wants to work. That is why I am buying myself a new one for christmas. lol

If you havent updated it ever i could see it taking 3 days. I will just keep packing them together and do alot of em at once.

As far as the screen. I know it sounds dumb but check the power and vga cable. It's prob just loose. I dont see any other logical explaination for it randomly turning off.

Hell if I know. Everything was on auto pilot as far as I knew so the updates should have been flowing in on thier own etc.

Cody said its all my fault because when I am uploading 300 pics at 6mb a picture when an update is downloading I tend to cancel the DL:ermm: He is probably right, he has alot more brains then I do when it comes to this junk.

The way i see it the pictures come first:p

Your monitor and your updates slowing down your computer, are you sure they are related? Is it possible your monitor is just crapping out on you, and isn't related the rest of your problems?

Here's what you do. Before you go to bed go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> and then click on "Disk Cleanup"

It will scan your computer and it might take quite a while if you haven’t done it before. Once it’s done scanning check the following boxes: Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Compress Old Files. Hit ok and confirm and it will do the rest.

That should clean you up a little bit and shouldn’t delete any of your files.

NEXT:
Warning: This may slow down your computer drastically while it’s working and may take a really long time if you haven’t done it before (should be able to finish by the morning if you do this before you hit the sheets)

Go to the same "System Tools" folder and click on "Disk Defragmenter". When it opens up click the "Analyze" button. It will scan the contents of your Hard Drive and most likely it will say "You should Defragment this volume" if it does go ahead and hit the "Defragment" button in that window and let it do its thing.

This will organize all the contents of your hard drive so your computer will be able to find files quicker. This is generally a drastic improvement if it has been a while.

That EXACT problem happened to me about 3 weeks ago. The cable running from the comp to the monitor kept blacking out the screen. It took us a while to get it going but it did it again so we just bought a new monitor. I think the problem was the cabe was being sandwiched between the wall and the monitor and eventually, the outlet plug in the back of the monitor got loose and went.

never gave that a thought:o the keyboard cable snagged one of the little clips on my boot the other day and the damn keyboard stopped working:p I dont think I can reach the monitor cable cuz i got short legs, but I can blame it on the wife if she happened to loosen it while she was re attaching the key board:devil:

Ours did the same thing, it would turn blue or go blank, it was a loose cable in the back. Make sure they're all properly attatched and then things are screwed on the vga cable

you wouldnt happen to have a ATI Radeon video card would you?

on Dec. 13th, a new driver was released, ver 6.12 catalyst. if your PC is set up for auto-updating, it may have been resetting video drivers.
