this is such a newb question but i learned on automatic quads and since im getting a 400ex soon i was wondering how you shift
i know you pull in the clutch and hit the shift lever i just dont know if you hit it up to shift or or down to shift up and also how do you put it in reverse?

the gears are in this order starting from the bottom.

1-N-2-3-4-5

So when you are in neutral you have to shift down to get into first then to shift into 2-3-4-5 you shift up. Don't know about reverse though my 03's don't have it. maybe someone else will chime in

Its like that on almost all quad/bike motors.

It's not really after 1st, it's between 1st and 2nd. If you lift your shifter up slowly from 1st, you'll see your N light come on.

right, just be sure that when your going from 1st to second to make sure you shift up hard, ive had a couple instances where i tapped it up and ended up going into nuetral instead of second for some reason.

Just incase you were looking at used 400s, reverse is only on machines 05 and newer. To work it, you turn the knob on the right fender and down shift. (I think.)

On mine with the clutch in and in first, turn the knob and shift down. You will feel it shift and the light will come on. It's simple.

To go into Reverse from Neutral you must turn the Reverse Knob on the right front fender, hold in the clutch, and step Down on the shifter twice (Once from 1st Gear). The Red Reverse indicator light will illuminate to let you know you got it. You must use the throttle and clutch just like you normally do for forward gears. To return back to foward gears you simply pull in the clutch and lift the shifter once and you're back in 1st gear or twice for neutral.

but do you need to switch the knob once to get into reverse and then switch it back for forward?

I am almost positive the knob turns back on its own. It may be spring loaded or it may do it when you shift up. Not entirely sure.

The Knob is only used to put it INTO Reverse. It's not needed to take it out of Reverse.

then how do you switch it back into reverse after you already came out of reverse?

You must use the reverse knob to go in to reverse. Once you take it out of reverse you must use the knob again to put it back into reverse. You do not need to use the knob to take it out of reverse.

does the knob twist back by itself or can it just keep twisting?

The knob is rotated 90 degrees clockwise and is spring loaded. It twists back on it's own once you release it.

IMO there is no sport quad made with a fast reverse .....just hit N and push it back is alot faster then tryin to find reverse :)

If you actually had reverse you'd see it differently. It's really easy to use and it comes in handy all the time. Reverse is geared the same as 1st. You can get going quit fast if your not careful.

actually, if u look at the manuel, reverse is geared higher. i think it is stupid for them to gear reverse so high, and then put the rev limiter at like 3000 RPM. u get no power for getting urself out of sticky situations. i would like to see it geared alot lower....like the 300ex....and the rev limiter be alot higher. There is a mod that I did which removes the reverse rev limiter and allows me to restart in Reverse. You are right about the gear being very tall but, it's similar to 1st gear. I have not gotten stuck yet.

You don't get out much do you???
As krt400ex said you CAN go into Neutral from 2nd. It's just a half click down from 2nd and a half click up from 1st.
