FRIENDS OF OCEANO DUNES TO HOST CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION’S COASTAL CLEANUP DAY

Non-profit Organization Chairs Annual Cleanup Day In Oceano On Saturday, September 21st, 2002

OCEANO, CA – September 16, 2002 – Friends of Oceano Dunes today announced that it is teaming with the California Coastal Commission to host the 18th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at Oceano California. The beach cleanup event is open to the public and will begin at 9:00 on September 21st, 2002. The group will meet at the entrance to “Sand Highway” (pole 4.5) at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area (ODSVRA). Trash bags and pick-up will be provided by State Parks.

“Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, show community support for our beaches, learn about the impacts of marine debris and to have fun,” said Anthony Herring, Friends of Oceano Dunes’ Clean Beaches’ coordinator and captain of Coastal Cleanup Day at Oceano. “I was delighted to be invited to champion the event for the California Coastal Commission. Over the last year, Friends of Oceano Dunes has been working diligently to care for the beach and dunes’ environment while maintaining access for the public.”

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. Each year, more than 40,000 volunteers turn out to over 400 cleanup sites statewide to conduct what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 506,000 Californians have removed more than 7.5 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year.

In addition to chairing the statewide coastal cleanup day at Oceano, the
Friends of Oceano Dunes promotes responsible recreation and hosts regular cleanup events at the popular state park. The Clean Beaches™ program sponsored by Friends of Oceano Dunes consists of monthly cleanup events at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area.
