View Full Version : A-Arm Buyers Guide!! Post Pics of A-arms

Evan
09-18-2002, 01:01 AM
What we need is a a-arm buyers guide. What I think would be best is a closeup of the ball joints and arms and how they mount. Post Pics if you have them. Heres my Lonestars,,, my complaints
-Locknuts are a pain to take on and off.
-Studs seem small and can bend if just a bit too far out
-Grease doesnt stay in rubber boots, gets all over everything
-Powdercoat doesnt last
-Not worth the price paid

Pluses
-Well built
-adjustable camber and caster
-grease zerks to keep it greased

HSD Racing. www.hsdracing.com They are the same as Houser pretty much, just a lil less $$$$ I think, got my whole front end (a-arms, elka ssd triple rate dual adjusts, brake lines) For $1353. You can also see my quad on the HSD site under the 250R/400EX a-arm page. If you talk to Mark, tell them Jason Zittel sent you.

im sellin my laegers for them at the end of the year, danny (merrell) comes out to some of the races here, he lives close to here, and i hav talked to him alot about his stuff, he is a reall good guy, i belive his arms are as good as roll's, his swaybar mounts mount on the top arm, which looks kinda wierd, but they are some of the nicest arms availible, not sure if he powdercoates em, i know they chrome em, heres the site if u wana check it out www.merrellextreme.com

Here is a set of +2 Burgards. They fit well and went on easy. The only part that I don't like is that the ball joints are just bare so I had to hand paint them to keep them from rusting....that darn salt water air just eats stuff up.

Anybody on here have Pictures of Laeger, Roll, Gibson, Burgard, Arens, or Walsh A-Arms? We need to get Opinions of all the A-Arms and Pictures so we can just put this in the FAQ Forum. Also need to do the same for Shocks, Swingarms, and Steering Stems.

Here is an LSR Anti-Vibe steering stem. It's so much stronger then stock and the anti-vibe part works very well! It's not hard to install but you do have to disassemble the entire front end of the quad to put it on.

I take it you mean jumping pics, I've tried to take pics of me jumping it, but my digital camera takes like 3 secs. after you push the button to take the picture. All the pics, I had taken either were a partial pic or I wasn't in the pic at all. We've even tried to time the pic by pushing the button early, didn't work. I'm getting a more high end camera soon that hopefully will be able to take some good action pics. Here is a pic of it looking sweet sitting in my yard:

I took my side cases off and took them to a place that polishes fine silveware up to make it look like new, it cost me like $50 for each side. They did it with commercial machines. I didn't want to attempt to do it myself.

As of 3 months ago, Brad had told me he wasnt going to build a 400ex subframe, I offered him 500$ just to do me one, he said he didnt have time to do the Research and Development and wasnt planning on doing them. I ended up with a stinking lonestar. There was a guy selling some on ebay, a no name brand, but it looked better than the lonestar, his was chromed with a buy it now price of 400$! Not bad. Tom Miller Motorsports builds them, but he is in the business of ripping you one, he wants 500$ with a plain powdercoat, and ECATV has a guy that build them.

I have a set of burgard +2 a-arms with works triple rates. I got a smoken deal on them so I couldn't pass them up, well the a-arms anyway. I like them a lot now and they have worked very well for us but we also only really ride the dunes. The 400 has had some good air and I've tagged a couple trees while climbing idiot holes but the arms have held up well. The chrome job on them isn't the best up close but we've ridden them for almost a year now without any problems and everyone that takes it for a rip likes the ride.

I posted a picture of them on page 1 or 2 of this thread, let me know if you would like to see another.

I have installed several sets of Herrmanns a-arms on XC racers quads as well as MXers. I've also maintained these quads through out the seasons and can say that Herrmann Racing products will with stand Pro level abuse. I also have my own R (89) with a Herrmann schwing arm on it and its great. I love the fact that after racing so many years, and haveing every part from every other co. roll, lsr, leager, etc. I can get the same quality parts for alot less money from Herrmannracing.com

#2.........sorry that the pics arent the clearest.

I got these from Baldwin. I ordered them last year in Jan. and got them in march.

I paid 800 for them.......htey are 700 without the chrome uppers....they have laegers new, stronger ball joints in.

12-24-2002, 01:10 AM
Laeger +2. Love em...strong...and look good.

Strong sounds right. A friend has them on his Craptor and after nailing a tree about 30-40mph and bending his frame so bad it was trashed the one ball joint (rod end or whatever) showed no bending and the other about a 3/8" but the arms were straight as when he instlled them the week b4.

As I have said b4 all the rod ends are not that weak and maybe it would be better to have a weak link in the system for collisions sort of like how cars crumple up etc. and maybe save guys like my friend a 600.00 frame over 1/2 set of 700.00 arms. Just a thought anyhow.

BTW the frame was tweeked real bad and both in the upper and lower frame and enough to cause the skid plate to appear to be 4" lower than the frame. It moved a lot and twisted also.

i dont have one single complaint about my Laeger's, they are beefy, i dont see me destroying them anytime soon (i have bent a tierod though, but i have no plans on replacing it), and they look good, are good, i will buy these again should the time come, or Merrell's.

JB (Jody Bateman) makes badass +3 for the 400 with out long travel. Mark Baldwin has pics on his website (www.baldwinmotorsports.com) but there over $100 cheaper if you just order from Jody. Everyone around here runs either the Pro Trax leagre front end, JB, or Fishers. JB are what I’m going to use since I’ve never ever seen a problem with them. Also he gets an extremely strong powder coat finish that looks great and I’ve never even seen have a small chip in it. If you’re interested I’ll post his shop # for you guys.

You guys are a tough crowd....LOL.

Okay, I personally dont like adj. heim joints on the bottom a-arms because you have way too much adj. that you have to get right. I like fixed bottoms, however there is a benefit. Look closely at the bottom heim joint where it hits the spindle. Not alot of it is sticking out of the a-arm. This will make them not as prone to break at the stud, but I still dont like heims on the bottom arms to hook to the frame. Just my opinion.

I wouldnt say a waste. I just believe they are better off not being put there for 2 reasons--weaker than solid 4130 chromoly, and can be a pain in trying to adj. and align the front end because they are not fixed in one place. Just my opinion.

still the best front-end you can buy. Actually more money than Roll because the T-pin is 2200 plus 1325 for the Axis shocks. Nothing handles like these and there is nothing stronger.

I know I have said this b4 but if they use the right heims or rod ends they are extremely strong and I would rather bend a 50.00 (much less if you know where to buy them outside our industry) rod end than a 500.00 plus a-arm.

Your right on the adjustment thing since most people have trouble just setting the camber and any extra adj points will just make it harder.

ylw i don't like them bc east coast atv makes them...

some of the coversions they make dont' look that great, and i've seen a few of his products that were not straight from them...

John, those look like they have the new needle bearings in the arms, and if so how do you like them and how well did they "fit up".

Quad is looking good BTW

Thanks for the compliment and they were a little pain to mount up but nothing that difficult. I mean the threads where the balljoints screw in had all powdercoat in them so it was a pain and i had a slight problem with one of the sleeves having the wrong I.D. so ther bolt would not go through but houser has been nothing but great to me. They overnighted me a new sleeve free of charge and i also called up abt some replacement grease zerks cuz one came off and they sent me another 4 with the washers for free also. All of this with no questions asked about how any of it happened. But overall i love the a arms and they are very high quality. Now i gotta start on the rear end cuz its wearing out quick. i need new sprockets, chain, i bent the axle, and that caused the rim to loosen and elongate the holes in the rims  so im gunna have to drop atleast another 1000 into it. Just when you think you can settle down you cant. Sorry for the ramble now back on topic!:scary:

I have Herrmann +3's for 19" shocks. I only had one problem. I went to set the camber and the right side is turned all the way in and has 1 degree of camber. The left is four turns out and has 6 degrees of camber. Is there a secret for setting it up right?

Other then that I think they are nice and very well built.

how about these? I agree, whats that bottom adjustment for anyway?? does it help??

walsh puts those there for a very good reason. he has spacers that comes with the a arms and you can adjust the a arms back an inch or forward an inch, im not quite sure if its an inch but you can move them forwards and backwards.

so it sounds like everyone likes +3's LT but they are too expensive. What is the cheapest +3's LT? Jave you guys heard of the new company in IL making a arms? I heard they were supposed to be really good and cheaper than everything else. Ill try to find out the name again, cause I forgot, and let you all know.
