Might buy a 450...What to do and look for?

Im lookin at gettin a 2004 yfz450. The only thing done engine wise is a port and polished head. I was just wonderin, is there anything special i gotta do maintnence wise (special things i hafta clean, change, etc). And any tricks you guys have for lookin out for any problems down the road. And what problems you guys had with them. Thanks alot-

It wouldn't hurt to check the valve clearances. On the 450s you should keep an eye on them.

i really haven't had any problems with my yfz and it is a really good atv. I would really recommend it. the honda is a little better, but i love my yfz

SINCE YOU ARE LOOKING AT A 2004 THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS YOU CAN CHECK FOR...

1 TAKE A MULTIMETER AND CHECK THE VOLTAGE OUT OF THE REGULATOR AC VOLTAGE...
PLUS CHECK THE STATOR THE STATOR IS KNOW TO BE LETS SAY VERY CRAPPY ON THEM....

2 CHECK THE SWINGARM OVER VERY WELL THERE KNOW TO CRACK ....

3CHECK THE SUBFRAME THERE KNOW TO CRACK TO IF THERE NOT GUSSET I HAD MINE DONE....

BESIDES THAT THEY RUN GREAT AND ARE VERY FAST VERY DEPENDABLE....JUST TAKE CARE OF THE OIL....

The swingarms on the 04's do crack above where the linkage goes, but you can replace the 04 swingarm with a 05 that is alot stronger for cheap if the guy hasnt already done that...

They leak coolant out of the weep hole due to a bad seal, but that's a $10 fix, or a $50 perminent fix if that hasnt already been done.

Also check and see if the plastic plug that is at the top of the cylinder has been replaced with an aluminum one. If not, it's a $10 fix.

Other than those things, you just have to do normal maintainence and it should be a great quad!!!

My 04 has over 200 hours of riding and racing on the oriiginal bore and piston, and hasn't had any problems other than normal things that break or bend... tie rods, axles, steering stems. But nothing that's really a weak spot other than what I've mentioned above...

WHAT PART FIXED THAT FOR $50.00 WHERE CAN I GET ONE....????

AND I HEARD THE 05'S HAVE THE SAME SWINGARMS AS THE 04'S

ISNT IT THE 06 THAT HAS THE BETTER AND STRONGER ONE....

YOU MAY BE RIGHT BUT I THOUGHT THEY THE 06 THEY CHANGED THEM NOT 05....

i used to have a 2004 and had frame problems. It bent a lot so i bought an 06. No prblems with the frame yet.
