03 z-400 choke

ok this is a dumb question but it is for a buddy of mine. he has a 03 z-400 the choke is on the left of the bars. he does not have the manual for it and does not know how the choke works. i know this is a dumb question but to work the choke do you slide it down with your thumb or leave it in the up position. i rode it today cause he said it wont run right. so i rode it with the choke lever in the up positiion and it ran perfect. when i pushed it down it started cutting out. i think up means choke off and down is choke on.

yes when you push the lever down the choke is on. when you push it away from you its off (in the top position). when riding leave it in the top position. just use it when your first starting it up and such.
