I have a 2005 400ex with stock size tires. A lot of the trails I ride on have spots that are are about an inch too high in the middle and I almost get high centered in the slow areas. Wasn't as much a prob before the swingarm skid plate. Question is what is a good all around size tire for the 05 400ex that is a little bigger. I have a 13T front sprocket so a little bigger tire won't hurt much. Kind of like to gear it back down a little without going back to the 14T.

i guess u could always try a 22i nch rear. in my opinion it doesnt look as good but is it works who cares.

I think they look sik with 22's. My bud put 22inch bear claws on his 05 and it not only goes everywhere that his dads brute force goes through, it looks real nice as well. Im putting 22inch dirt devils all around and maybe an inch wider than stock if i get the 06 or 7.

I use a Maxxis All Trak with excellent results. They're a great all around knobby that goes remarkably well even in mud (I have a set on my 4wd too) They're also an inexpensive tire at under $60 each.

I have got an Idea why dont you just get a 4x4 if you are going to embarass your 400ex with some dorky shoes. I mean that would be like you putting on a size 16 shoe.

 J/k I just have to laugh about this post because everybody at the MX track laughs at 20" tire let alone 22. But I understand because you have a different style of riding than I do.

I currently run 22" tires only because that is what the local shop had right when I picked up my bike. I haven't really noticed any issues with them at all except a seldom low speed bog a bit.

I'll be going back to 20"ers here real soon

the new itp gncc come in 21 inch size, a good compromise between 20 and the 22's, theyre 6 ply too!

kenda makes the 21" knarly as well. great tire and the size is perfect. the knarly is a great tire all around adn the XC version comes in a 21" and 22". the 21" is perfect for trails.

I had the same trouble with the skid plate. Mine had a cross brace in the back that wasnt neccesary. I cut the middle out of it and now i go thru everthing. If you didnt get stuck with the stock skid plate you may check your new to see if there is a catch place on it.

And yes you got a good deal on the axle. Definatly replace your bearings and any other worn parts since you will have the rear torn apart.

I gyuess switching from my 22x8x10 front tires and going to a 23x8x10 isnt gonna make a big difference in ground clearance...probably only about 1/2" higher...23" height seems tp be the tallest they make for a 8" wide tire on a 10" rim

I am gonna go from a 20x11x9 rear tire to a 22x11x9...that should make a noticeable difference

I also vote for larger tires,i run 23x7x10 fronts and 22x11x9 rear maxxis razr II all around and i love them.A great choice for agressive trail riding
