backfiring & popping

just bought this 99 400 and its backfiring through the carb and popping its all stock i put a 42 pilot in but that dident help any ideas?had it almost a week now and no ride time:grr: :grr: :grr:

Check the valve clearances, change the spark plug and clean the carb.

cleaned the carb i need to get a socket still to pull the plug it seems to run better with the choke on not while riding just on idle and reving in neutral

Check the tool container near the rear grab bar. It has a spark plug removal tool. That's if the previous owner didn't remove it.

try turning you mixture screw out a quarter turn til it goes away..

Also check the studs that hold the exhaust headders onto the head. If they're loose, you will get backfiring on deceleration.
