Hey i was just wondering if i have to use the metal air filter or if i can just run the foam one. And if there is really any advantage to doing that. Thanks for any input.

The metal "filter" just acts as a skeleton so the foam filter doesn't collapse. The foam filter slides over the metal insert. Unless your talking about aftermarket like a Uni. You wont need the stock insert as the uni has a rigid spring inside to prevent collapse.

The uni has a spring? I have one and they just sent a different "cage" with bigger holes for more flow, maybe I got robbed?

Probably not, Just checked again. My Uni's for the 300ex's have the springs. I mainly run the 400 with K&N w/outerwears. Maybe the 400ex Uni is different - can't remember.

The UNI on the EX has a cage not a spring. The hi-flow cage acts as a support for the filter to prevent it from collapsing.

Specify what "EX", as the uni's for the 300's most definitely has a rigid spring frame.

I meant 400EX! We are in the TRX400EX Information forum. I own a TRX400EX with UNI filter so it's safe to assume when I said "EX" that I meant 400EX not 300EX.

Well considering you posted right after me and basically parroted my reply of it being a frame to prevent collapsing, you should have specified what model, as I mentioned both. How would I know what bikes you have just because you have 1 in your sig. I have several different quads/dirtbikes and list none.

So basically your saying is, you thought your UNI filter on your 300EX was the same as that on a 400EX and you were wrong. When I corrected you you got angry with me.
If you don't own the filter on this type of quad than why try to give accurate advice. You were wrong and now your getting upset with me.

Looks like your the one that got angry  and I corrected myself before you even posted. Do me a favor and show me exactly where I got angry in this thread ......

Right there.

You guessed wrong and realized it when another 400EX/UNI filter owner questioned you about what you typed. Afterwards, you yourself questioned what you had posted earlier.
I steered you straight before you misinformed anyone else. You had already convinced one guy that he a gotten ripped off.
I wanted the right information to get out for the right type of quad.
Your advice on UNI filter construction should be limited to the 300EX forum.

If you follow the thread, your the one that got bent before I even typed that. I made an error, then corrected it before you even showed up. "Woe is me" will be the cry for everyone that thought they bought a rigid spring uni filter for a 400ex that read this post. I can already hear it ringing throughout the lands. You may not hear it that well though, as high as you are on that pedestal of yours. Do you know as fact that uni never had such a design for the 400ex filters in the past? Hopefully one day we will all be as proficient as you in the inner workings, engineering and design of uni filters......hopefully one day very soon.

Hey everybody thanks for the help. I am going to invest in the Unifilter and get rid of the stock metal thingy.

I've heard the foam filters are better than say, the k&n filters. The k&n I'[ve heard clogs faster than foam thus preventing air passing. Thats the word on the street. Never seen any R and D.
