I've got a buddy that just got a 450r about 2 weeks ago he wants to get the oil changed and such I told him to come on out since we have quad shop (dad and I) but I've never had a 450r in the shop and I dont have one myself. So I wanted to ask before he came out, what oil is needed I dont want to get into brand war or anything :) like 10w40 motorcycle oil, and how much for a change.

You will need to change the oil on motor side, and trans side. Also, without getting into brand wars, etc. (to each is own, and Im not sponsored) SO, I use 10w-40 Honda HP4M (Syn blend with Moly) on engine side and 10w-40 Honda HP4 on tranny side (Syn blend without moly) Summer mos I will use 20w-50 HP4M & HP4. Each side take less than a Qt, so get a Qt of each, and a filter of course. Every so often, the alum seal washer, and oil filter house o-ring will need to be changed too. I change oil after every ride, and oil & filter every other ride (cheap ins)

Keep in mind that your friend shouldnt have to change is oil after every ride. Unless he is really, really riding hard the manufacturers suggestions should be fine, which is 10 hrs for break in and 20 hrs after I believe. Even after 20 my oil still has the nice maple syrup color to it. Just check the window and make sure it doesnt get low cause most 450r's will burn off a lil within that 20hr period. BTW I live FL and used to run honda HP4 20-50 and now run Maxima 20-50 syn, no problems with either. Also I dont have my manual around but I believe the trans side only needs to be done maybe every 30-40 hrs i think?

If he has a belly plate on it, Take the damn thing off befor you drain the tranny side or you'll have a real nice STAIN on your floor:mad:

your sig says you have an 05.
the 06 has seperate motor/clutch oil, and no oil cooler.

if you have a "quad shop" im sure you have access to service manuals (they are very helpful)

I didnt see anyone says this yet so I will. If he is still in the first few oil changes (1 thru 5) Do not put a moly in the engine side (never in tranny). I say this because in my opion and its just an opion but an engine will not properly break in with moly oil in it. I know this is debatable but like I said already just my opion.

honda hp4m with moly.... period.

these engines have two seperate oil reserves for a reasons.. so u can use engine specific oil and tranny specific oil....

tranny side use hp tranny oil also from honda.

the honda stealership I bought from says to run the hp80/85 in the clutch side.
the gn4 is the motor side.

I have been wrong in the past and my be wrong in the future but

this is the usa chump. and anyone can state opinion.

so next time you have a "thought" you can state it or shove it.

because you have that right!

oh the new insert sheets say 5w30 or 10w30, im sure you got those also.
