Well here it goes, please hear me out on this.

I have a 2003 250EX with mods below. I have been having engine problems lately. To descibe it - at idle you can hear a clunking noise like tap-tap-tap-tap. It goes in a steady beat. Now when it rides it sounds and feels fine. But then when you go to shut it off, it sounds like something is still spinning for 1-2 seconds and then you hear the same clunk as beofre and it is quiet.
If a better description is needed I can do.

Any ideas on what is wrong?
Any ideas on how to fix it?
I am guessing I shouldnt ride it either, right?

Thanks for the help, this site has been a big money and stress saver for me.

Nope, the idle noise is that same clunking noise at a steady, even clunking.

mine makes all kinds of wierd noises. it ticks it bobbles it clunks and sometimes it even gets a weird sucking sound but none of it ever hurt my bike they just kind of came and went. it would be best if you found out but i doubt it will hurt anything

No - this is different. It never made this sound, and I have a feeling it is something bad.

Does it have a recoil?

Sounds like something screwy with the centrifical clutch.

At idle and shutoff it's disengaged. And something is rattling or clunking. (spinning and clunking). When reving up.. the clutch engages so rattling/clunking parts are compressed and held in place.

Just my off the top of the head thought.
