View Full Version : first mod

Alright, I've saved up about 500 dollars now, and am ready to do something to my machine (stock '02 400ex). I am wondering what would give me the most bang for the buck, right now i'm thinking about a WB R4 or yoshimura comp slip-on and a k&n power kit. Or maybe some works A/T steeler shocks.

What do you suggest?

What was your first mod?

my first mod was my curtis sparks pipe, it's really really worth the money. It puts out the most hp. It's fairly loud though, but not an annoying loud. it's $425 so u would still have enough to buy a dyno jet kit.

my first was nerf bars for the track so if my feet slip off the pegs they dont hit the ground and snap my ankles.

Lets see if I had 500bucks, WB e-series slipon exhaust $250, K&N jet kit w/ filter $70, and then some DG pro pegs (nerfs) $??? . Then I'd be broke again :D

i'm not concerned with the noise level, just that its under the legal limit. I think a slip-on/nerf combo would be good.

I ride with 2 other EX's with ac nerfs and a DS so I don't want to get what everyone else has, and I need some speed to keep up with the 650, that's why I was thinking about a Yosh. (looks cool and good power gain)

Now that I think about it I'll go with a Yosh slip-on and nerfs, but more suggestions are welcome:D

k&n fliter is a must w/ a pipe

07-30-2001, 07:55 PM
yeah if u get a pipe i would highly recommend getting a k&n air filter and a couple jets and do it all at once. and if i had to suggest a pipe i would have to say Pro-Meg complete system if u could afford it. im very happy with mine

I'm planning on getting a jet kit with whatever pipe I decide to get, I looked at the pro meg, but the sytem is 474.99 in the Kirk, or 460.99 for the R4, so it's kind of expensive for me, if I get nerf bars too.

So it's either the E-series, R4, or the yosh comp, all slip-ons what are your opinions on each?

Also what nerfs, I am thinking about Gradon-Prolines, do they make anything besides propegs?

I ride in mostly dusty conditions, but if it rains the night before or morning of our ride there will be lots of staning water, so should I get a K&N or Uni 2 stage filter

Thanks in advance:)

K&N's don't protect well in dust, but a foam filter like Uni does, matters how dusty and how much you care about a lil dust in your engine.

Look in a dirtwheels mag and find a magic racing add,,,they sell power up kits for around 500 beans,,,it will take care of your needs with no problem,,and you'll love the exry power,,,later

K&N might not filter as good as foam filters but i ride in really dusty conditions from time to time with my K&N /w Outerwares and with the airbox lid off and as long as u KEEP THE FILTER CLEAN and OILED i dont see the problem with it. but i dont think i would run it without the outerware

aaight $500 i would get...
White Bros R4
DG Nerf bars
K&N jet Kit
K&N aifilter
Outerwears for airfilter
and if u got anything left get some skid plates!!

I'VE GOT THE WB R4 SLIP ON. IT SOUNDS AND LOOKS THE BEST OF ALL THE 400 EX'S I RIDE WITH. JUST ABOUT ANY SLIP-ON ADS ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF HP ACCORDING TO THE SHOOT OUT DONE IN DIRT WHEELS MAG. THE LOW NOISE LEVEL PIPES DON'T DO QUITE AS MUCH AS THE FULL RACE PIPES. THE DIFFERENCES IN MOST OF THE PIPES LOOKS LIKE COULD ONLY BE MEASURED BY THE DYNO AND NOT THE SEAT OF YOUR PANCE. IT USUALLY MATTERS WHAT OTHER MODS ARE PERFORMED TO GET THE MOST OUT OF EACH PIPE AND BIKE.
HAVE A GOOD RIDE.

I`d get the Sparks X-4 pipe for $425, Sparks advance for $15, Sparks foam filter with a ring that holds everything tight for $39, and the air box mod to let more air to your engine but not dirt with the custom cover for $15. A total of $494. Check out sparksracing.com

For $300 you can get a good set of front shocks (works). If you don't jump that high though I wouldn't get them then. If you would get the works I would get a good set of handlebars. Mine were toasted before I got a set.
