I was looking for online or magazine reviews of 2005 or 2006 400EX's since I'm in the market for one. Thanks!

Hiya don't know about magazine reviews, but i've got a 07 400ex and so far i'm very impressed with it.This is my first quad and my decision to buy the 400 over the 450r was based on years of trouble free riding on the xr400.which the 400ex's motor is based on.The only mods i've made so far is to take off the 14t front sprocket and replace with a15t.The quads got more than enough power for what I do (mostly flat track).Next mod will be a pro-circuit pipe & k&n filter, maybe a re-jet.

The only negative thing I can think of is that I couldn't get mine in black.

Hope this helps.

Our 06 is one of our best purchases to date! the reverse i always said wasnt needed, is the most used feature:D

the styling changes look good, and its a typical bullet proof honda

Totally agree Pappy, try hauling 175 kilos out of a bog hole without reverse.

This was another reason I went for the 400 over the 450

Also you could go on a dealer website and go to rider reviews. I do that and every review for the 400 was 5 stars.

Thanks for the link to the review!! This would be my first ATV also. A friend used to have a 660 Raptor and a 400EX and he'd let me ride the 400EX so I am fairly familiar with the ATV. Even for someone who was a novice rider, the 400EX was loads of fun, comfortable, and had plenty of power for riding in the woods. Also from what little I have found in articles, the EX is nearly bulletproof which is a big plus! Who wants to be broke down 15 miles from the truck! My wife & I will use it in our back yard (woods), ride with other local friends in the Memphis area, and probably make some trips to LBL in Kentucky since we're orginally from there. We did go by the local Honda dealer last weekend so she could sit on one and she instantly feel in love. She rode 3 wheelers as a kid, so she is somewhat familiar with ATV's herself. Now it's time to save our money and see if we can find a low hour 05/06 EX this coming spring or summer :D

what kind of bumper is that on the 400ex, Pappy?

I have a 2006 and I love it! Reverse and electric start were the selling points for me.
Be certain to shop around to get the best price. Honda dealers are just like car dealerships. Don't fall for the "sticker price". You can bargain with them. I saved $1,200 going to 3 dealerships looking for the best deal. I even quoted the other dealers offering price. They were always eager to go a bit lower to make a sale.
Good luck in advance. You'll be glad you bought one the first time you ride your own. :D

That is great to know. I wasn't sure if you could haggle with a dealer or not. However, since we'll probably get a used one, it'll likely be bought from an individual.

I've been watching Ebay & ATVTraderOnline.com for 400EX's. Are there any additional places I should be looking?

I bought mine new. Towards the end of the model year the dealers are eager to get rid of the quads on the showroom floor prior to the new year's quads showing up. You can get a heck of a deal on a new one.
Important thing to remember is only the 2005 and newer 400EXs have reverse which is a nice thing to have if you're going to trail ride.
Some dealerships sell a few used ones as well. They get them as trade ins. This website has a section of Honda ATVs for sale. Check here:

cant go wrong with a 400ex especially for someone just starting out, they are bulletproff, easy to mod when you get some extra cash and want to go faster.
