Im new and was wondering what the +2 arm etc. is, what it does, and how it helps?

width of the a-arms.

+2+1 is 2 inches wider and one inch forward...

+2+1 means +2" on each side and +1 inch forward

Obviously stability is to be gained with 2" wider, but what do you gain with 1" forward?

It lengthens your wheelbase and makes it track better at higher speeds. It will also change the balance point of the quad to help keep the front end planted or make the quad better balanced in the air.

While that may be true, most quads I've ridden with +1 forward actually handle worse. The front end seems to push an awful lot. Not a fan of +1 forward. my .02

It depends on what other components you have.

For example, +1" forward with +1.25" out back rode pretty good. But I could imagine that +1" forward on stock length swinger would feel weird. All about Geometry!

It also depends on the quad. Some quads benefit from the +1 forward and some don't.

Agree...................that's why I put "ALL ABOUT GEOMETRY!"

Exactly my point, and so far the banshee is the only one that I see that benefits from it.

Also the quad I rode did have a +1 1/4 swinger. Long travel front and rear and did not like the way it turned.

I don't do a whole lot of trail riding and not likely to be doing any racing either. I mostly ride at the sand dunes and am seriously considering at least widening the my 400ex. A buddy of mine has a set of Ricky Stator +3+1 a-arms w/g-force axle on the rear on his banshee. Granted can't compare apples to oranges, but wanted to know what you ex'ers recommend.

The Ricky Stator +3+1 a-arms retail for about $495 and I can get a pair of Houser Regular Travel +2,+0 A-arms for about $446. I won't do the front without doing the rears. I'll probably ride them once with my Works Triple Rate w/rezzies to see if they really need to be re-valved.

It sounds like pushing out the front-end may not necessary be the best thing?

any +2 a arms out there for sale for an ex. I found some shocks that fit my stature and now need to get some a arms to fit +2 shocks. Was planning on widening before i bought shocks. Just slowly buying up parts

The 300ex seems to benefit from the +1 forward also. Mine doesn't push much at all up front as long as I have the camber/toe set properly. I'm even running a stock swingarm although I do think it would handle better with another inch added to the swingarm. Every quad is different and if you get the wrong mix of a arms and swingarm you will get some handling issues.

Most would prefer the quad to be a little loose in the rear verses pushing up front. Also a front end push will also get much worse when the track/trail get slippery and you won't be able to turn very well.

like someone said, most quads dont need it. BUT it can be a good thing anyway, but only if you lengthen the swingarm the same amount as you have gone foward on the a-arms. then you get more stability at high speeds, w/o the push

for a 400ex? take the exhaust off a hayabusa street bike, cut off the extra headers and fill with jb weld. the silencer wont bolt up, but you can cut it off and use a coffee can. fill the coffee can with pink insulation (best performing color, you can find this in any wall in your house). put on the plastic coffee can top and drill 6 quarter inch holes

So what about all the R guys running plus 1 forward in the front and going with the shorter 88-89 length swing arms?

It's to make the 86-87 250r have the geometry of the 88-89

My 02 about +1 forward on 250Rs with the 88-89 length swingarm. I don't like the way it corners compared to +0 forward, seems like +1s pushed too much while the +0s were smoother everywhere on the track. I think the only difference between 86-87 and 88-89 250Rs were that 86-87 had a longer swingarm. I think the frontend geometry was the same on all year 250Rs. I have heard other wise but don't think this is true. Over the years I have had 3 86 Rs, 2 88s, and 3 89s and the fronts looked very similar between them all.
