I just took my quad to the shop to get an HMF pipe and Hotcam stage 1 and airfilter put on it. I am nervous as to when i go to break it in. How the heck am i supposed to know when 3000 RPM's is and how high should i put my idle? Also would going up and down a feild for 30-40 minuts at half throttle work goung from half throttle letting off then going back up to half throttle??? please explain to how i should ride it during the break in. Can i go through all the gears or stay in a specific gear like 3rd or 4th and how high of an RPM is too high?

Thank you VERY much. I just get stressed and nervous as to when it comes to doing this stuff.. I want my quad to run at its best so i want to break it in as BEST AS POSSIBLE!

Ask your dealer to break it in for you or ask them when you pick it up. They will probably give you a pretty good explanation on what they feel is best. A lot of people have different ways to break things in. After I installed the cam on my EX I just took it easy for an hour or so and it was fine.

1000+ rpms basically a hgih idle to half throttle for close to an hour, dont let it sit though, make sure to be riding it so it doesnt over heat

Break in for a cam you want varying RPMS, just ride it normal.

ive never broken in any of my motors. let them warm up, then ride like i would any other time. "break in" procedure is the biggest myth in the industry

yeah i don't think there is too much of a break in procedure. just vary the rpms and i wouldn't sit at idle much.

I agree with Letting a bike just warm up until the Oil is at Operating temoperature , and then you just take it from there .

im about to go and run my Cam in this afternoon (posted in stage 1 cam post ) , and I must tell you that my excitement about having a bit more power will probably have my riding the bike bonkers today . I want to get an hour's riding if possible , and thats it .
If the Mechanic did his job properly you really shouldn't have any problems at all .

Enjoy your new Cam , you are going to Love it , Just ask Kaleigh how ripped i am about mine . :)

when you first start it up have the throttle in like 1/4 of the way so that when it starts it wont idle. just ride for 30 mins like normal, but dont let the rpms drop real low, and DONT let it idle. after that 30 mins, shut it off and change the oil. then she should be ready to go. thats what i did

If you decide to break it in put a couple BIG fans on high infront of your quad and crank up the idle or rig it so it stays at a constant RPM so the new parts break in properly, and b sure to shut it down about every 20min or so pending on how hot she gets.. when u do this b sure to let it idle down but when restarting ur break in get it up to breakin speed asap

ride one or 2 times depending on how long ur rides are then change the oil and filter...

Like all have said let it warm up, avoid full top end ripper, 1/2 to 1 hr of normal riding and then change your filter and oil. Inspect for any metal just for the heck of it on your drain plug. After break in you can use synthetic.

Agree 100%.

30-45minutes of breakin time is absurd. If you're rings haven't seated in the first 45 seconds they aren't going to. At 3000rpm your piston rings have traveled the length of the cylinder walls 4500 times. At 6000 rpm its 9000 times. 35 minutes @ 3000rpm would be 210,000cycles X 80mm (on a 400ex) = 16.8 kilometers. Do you seriously think your rings need to travel nearly 17 kilometers to seat?

Your rings will either seat or not seat.. before your motor even gets warmed up, honestly.

Cam, ride it just keep it below 75% of the rev limit. If the rev limits 9000 keep it around 3000-7500 for the first 10 minutes or so. Then give her hell.
