Hey guys i am getting new tires this week, and am going to change my gearing up. I have 15 tooth front sprocket and a 39 tooth rear with 20 in. tires currenty.
I was thnking should i go down to a 14 in the front, 38 in the back and 18 in. tires.
I mostly trail ride and go to the track sometimes. I want it to be pretty quick but not to slow. I dont want to be shifting through gears really quick...

What do you guys think i should do as far as gearing and tires? I am thinking 20in tires for the clearance, but im not sure what i should do. Input is greatly appreciated!

What do you guys run as far as gearing and rear tires?

Definetly don't go smaller than 20's if you ride mainly trails. I would also switch to the 14 tooth, and the 38 for the track and the 39 for the woods.

I was gonna say, I used 14/39 and 20" tires, it kept me going pretty good and I kept the bottom end and had enough on top to keep up with everyone else.

I run 14/36 with 18x9.5x8 turf tamers.

we are talking trails here, not mx. I use 14/38 and 18's on track and going to a 36 on one bike.

if your engine has any mods at all the 14/38 with 20's will be fine. deffinately dont run 18's for trails.

Really? Read his post, he is talking about using 18 inch tall tires and going to the track sometimes. I'm just trying to help.

i trail ride with 18" turfs, even hop over fallen trees. I thought that was what the skid plate was for? :D

You can do 18's in the trails, but IMO your just making it hard on your self. Even more so if people ride 4 wheel drives where you ride...a 24, 26'' tire leaves a mighty deep rut.

yea the ruts could be a problem. I think i am just going to step the 15 down to a 14, and keep the 39.

I think i also am going to go with 20in tires. But i dont know what kind. They will be going on hipers, and i dont want ones that will wear fast.

So what tire to you think is best that would fit my application?

I was thinking of some Turf Tamers, or like some Kenda Klaws

I have holeshot xcr's that were ridden alot, now my friend has them, they have 1/2 thread about 5 years later. I rode those tires on my trx250r, then atc250r, then atc200x, now they are on my friend's trx450r. Some say they wear fast, mine didn't wear fast. Don't get turf tamers, they pack up easy with mud and they are 2 ply. For a woods tire you want a 6 ply tire, nothing is worse than a flat 20 miles from you truck. I have kenda knarly's on my hybrid(18" mx), and they wear pretty slow, I would imagine the xc 20" version wear about the same too.

I'm Also a hole shot XCR fan, I have 2 sets now and am looking to try the new cross country offering from hole shot. The new hole shot fronts look alot like the razor 2 fronts which IMO is the best front tire out.

anyone remember back in the day the best front tire was a grooved street tire or the 19.5x7 Hoosiers that they dont make anymore :D

you still can get grooved radials, I have them on my bikes(mx only). The downsides of them are on trails they are horrible, and a wet track they don't grab, just slide, giving you no control. I always have a set of kenda klaw fronts with me when I use them. I use turf tamers also, same thing, in the wet, slimey stuff they suck. I never heard of the hoosier tires used for mx, only flat track, did they groove them also??????? Sometimes I use flat track rears, but never thought of the fronts.
